Re:Monster Just Started Airing, but Fans Are Already Dropping the Anime

What’s wrong with the series?

Summary:

  • Re:Monster has just started airing.
  • The first episode was rather generic.
  • The series’ characters are unlikable and problematic.

Re:Monster started airing on April 1, 2024, and only one episode was enough to cause a small controversy among fans. But is it the right time to drop the series already, or should we give it some more time?

Re:Monster is another example of the countless reincarnation isekai anime that we see plenty of each season. It follows a man who was killed and got reborn in a fantasy world as a baby goblin. The goblins named him Goburou, and he is now part of their tribe.

There’s one thing that followed him into his new life: his power to gain the abilities of other living creatures by eating them. And he’s not too shy to use this power any time there is a chance to do so.

The Series Isn’t Special

Re:Monster doesn’t seem to offer anything new. There’s reincarnation, there’s a fantasy world, there’s violence and gore, there’s a pretty generic-looking story for now. The main protagonist seems too overpowered for the world he’s now living in, and fans are getting tired of this trope.

Of course, it’s natural to assume that Goburou will face struggles on his way in the future, but for now, he is some sort of a god that every other goblin wants to praise. But in the case of Re:Monster it’s even more annoying because the main protagonist doesn’t seem likable at all.

There have been conversations about the series being problematic even before the official release, and right now it feels like all of those allegations are coming true.

The first episode showed human women being captured by goblins, and there is no doubt about their role in the story.

The concept of rape is not new to anime, and we see tons of horrible things happening in various series, but manga readers say Re:Monster is especially disgusting when it comes to this, since rape isn’t frowned upon in this series. And judging by Goburou’s behavior in Episode 1, we’re prone to believe that.

Generic From The Start

Character design is another thing that disappointed fans tremendously. Re:Monster is simply not pleasant to look at. Everyone looks the same and extremely generic, there is little visual beauty and hardly any scenes that stay with you after you’ve finished watching.

Re:Monster tries hard to shock the viewer with the gore and cruelty of the world, but it fails. There’s nothing surprising going on in the series, none of the characters seem likable for now, the visuals are unimpressive, and there’s something alarming in the themes of the series.

It might deserve the benefit of the doubt, of course, since it’s been only one episode, but unfortunately, the anime doesn’t look good at the moment.
