Solo Leveling (Ore dake Level Up na Ken) Episode 9 aired on March 9, 2024, and it was breathtaking. Jinwoo’s fight with Megum…uhh… we mean Kang, was exactly what fans needed after two uneventful weeks of having a recap episode and the one without any action.
But stunning visuals and great action weren’t the only things that caught fans’ attention in the episode; Jinwoo’s character development made them think a lot about his future.
Beginning of the villain arc?
There haven’t been many details about the System yet, but there’s no doubt: it had a major impact on the main protagonist. It’s obviously influenced his physical appearance, skills, level and powers, but fans haven’t really thought about his mental state until now.
During his battle with Kang, Jinwoo mentions that another one of his emotions is gone, and the stronger he gets the more he feels something breaking inside of him. Which sounds like a line taken from a villain arc textbook.
Which made fans think that there was something else going on with the main protagonist. What if all this power and suffering keeps affecting Jinwoo’s mind and there comes a moment when he doesn’t know what’s right and wrong anymore.
It often starts like this: there’s a hero who wants the best for the world and its people, they experience some really dark and challenging things, they lose their mind and go down a wrong path. And there’s something about Jinwoo that makes fans think he’ll be like that.
Don’t worry, it’s not like that
Manhwa readers are here to reassure the anime-onlys that Jinwoo is not going to turn into a villain. They admit that the System does indeed affect him a lot, but it’s not going to turn him into an Eren Yeager of Solo Leveling.
What it will do, however, is make Jinwoo lose his faith in humanity bit by bit. He’s used to seeing himself as the weakest hunter, and as he gains more power, his worldview is starting to undergo some significant changes.
On top of that, the trauma of the Double Dungeon encounter as well as being forced to kill human hunters will stay with Jinwoo forever, and it’s impossible to come back from that. So get ready for even more change within him, but don’t worry, he won’t become the final boss of the series.
