Tired of Fantasy Tropes? Watch These 5 Anime With Good Exploration of Magic

We just want these things to be given more thought.

You definitely know what it feels like when you’re watching a fantasy anime, and you just think that the magic system in it doesn’t work for you. So here are some series where you don’t have to think about that.

  1. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren)

Frieren does a lot of things right, and its portrayal of magic is definitely among these things. The pacing is very enjoyable, and all the power-ups happen naturally and gradually.

The series follows an elven mage who doesn’t perceive time the way mortals do. When the members of her former party start dying of old age, Frieren decides to reevaluate the meaning of human bonds and pay more attention to those around her.

  1. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu)

Despite the anime having its issues and many fans disliking the main protagonist and even calling him problematic, the series has a very good depiction of magic.

Mushoku Tensei is an isekai series that follows a 34-year-old man, who wants to save a group of teenagers, but dies in the process. However, this is not the end of his story, and he gets reincarnated in another world as a baby. Rudeus has his old memories intact, so now he’s a weird combination of adult and child.

  1. Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame ni wa Shudan wo Erandeiraremasen)

Although fans say that the best exploration of magic is only on its way and will be more present in the upcoming season of the anime, the already aired seasons touch upon this subject, too.

Ascendance of a Bookworm follows Urano, who’s a true bookworm. That’s why it’s so ironic that a pile of books is exactly what ends her life: she’s crushed underneath it.

But fear not, she gets reincarnated as a little girl in a medieval era world, where books are difficult to find. Still, this unfortunate turn of events is not in the way of her passion: and if there are no books around, she’ll make them herself.

  1. The Ancient Magus' Bride (Mahou tsukai no Yome)

If you’re also craving romance, and not just a great magic system, The Ancient Magus’ Bride might be the perfect show for you.

Chise has been abandoned her entire life, so all she wishes for is to have a proper home. And she gets it when a mysterious masked man purchases her. He turns out to be a mage, of course, and Chise is to become his apprentice and eventually his bride.

  1. The Witch and the Beast (Majo to Yajuu)

The Witch and the Beast is this season’s true gem. Although the magic system is not 100% clear yet, the series has already managed to pique our interest with its supernatural elements.

The series follows a peculiar duo, Ashaf and Guideau, who work together on supernatural-related cases. Guideau has been cursed by a witch, and now she hates these creatures with a burning passion. Will she manage to find a way to break the curse, though? Watch and see.
