Stop hating on the series.

Summary:

  • Undead Unluck gets criticized a lot for its sexual themes.
  • They are not what they look like, though.
  • Undead Unluck promotes important messages.

Undead Unluck has a weird reputation in the anime community. Some say that it’s one of the greatest ongoing series and even think that it’s the best one this season. Some don’t understand the hype and take every chance they get to point out its fanservice and sexual innuendos, calling it weird and inappropriate. If you want a quick summary: we’re among the first ones.

What’s the issue with the series?

Undead Unluck might seem like a very sexual series when you first start watching it. It’s nothing like a weird anime about teenagers where all they want is just to creep on girls or get laid, but it does have its fair share of fanservice. Just look at the protagonists of the series: a half-naked man and a girl whose breasts are bigger than her head.

While sexualized girls used to be the anime norm, the times have changed, and now every series that is trying to be popular and serious should be more careful about its female representation. We want our girls to be smart, complex, strong and interesting. “Big boobs” are fine, but they are not a must anymore. Fans value personalities over appearance now, and it’s actually great.

Fuuko is not shallow

But the point is that Undead Unluck does have this personality. In fact, it does a lot of things right. Fuuko is not just a dumb “bib booba” girl. Not a shallow shell of a character. She’s very interesting and strong. And the further Undead Unluck moves with its plot, the more you understand how special Fuuko really is. Her character development is astonishing, and fans have been calling her one of the best female shounen protagonists of the ongoing manga series.

The main issue with Undead Unluck is that Fuuko’s power works only when she touches somebody with her bare skin. Thus, all of the sexual innuendos and gags ensue. But even this feature is not as bad as it looks. While Andy initially tries to have sex with Fuuko to cause great misfortune on himself, their relationship turns into something bigger over time, and they build a true bond.

On top of that, the series makes a big deal out of consent. Her abilities vary significantly based not only on how intimate her touch is but also on her relationship with the touched person. So for Andy’s plan to work, they have to have a connection with Fuuko. And while it’s quite bizarre and weird, it’s still the representation of the “sex can happen only with consent” theme, which, as we think, is an important message to deliver.

Besides, fans also point out that men are much more sexualized in the series. There’s hardly a moment when Andy is fully clothed. And just look at Shen, for god’s sake! His design is definitely intentional.
