Viral Hit is Going Anime: Should We Expect More Webtoon Adaptations Now?

Viral Hit is Going Anime: Should We Expect More Webtoon Adaptations Now?

The anime is set to premiere in Spring.

Summary:

  • There seems to be an uptick in anime adaptations of popular Korean webtoons.
  • Viral Hit is a manhwa about a high schooler getting into street fighting to pay for his mother’s hospital bills.
  • Fans are wondering how much the anime is going to adapt.

Adaptations of Korean series seem to be more and more popular in Japan these days. They have been around for a while, but only became a trend in 2020 with series like Kami no Tou (Tower of God). Currently, Solo Leveling (Ore dake Level Up na Ken) is the biggest hit of the season.

While these anime often draw skepticism from the public — mostly because the webtoons are more often than not praised for their art, which doesn’t always translate well into anime — it seems like they are here to stay. This is only confirmed by the recent announcement of an adaptation of Viral Hit (Kenka Dokugaku).

What is it about?

Viral Hit, also known as How to Fight, follows Yoo Hobin, who gets into the fighting scene to pay for his mother’s hospital bills. The manhwa follows him as he goes through a training regimen and hones his skills, which are later shown on “Newtube” (obvious play on YouTube) to a wider audience.

The series excels in making you root for the protagonist. It’s not just because he’s a normal guy with a perfectly understandable motivation. Most of the people he fights are bullies or otherwise objectively terrible people, and you don’t feel very bad when he beats them up.

Not the first adaptation of author’s work

The writer of the original, T.jun, is the same person who made another popular fighting webtoon, called Lookism. This one has also been adapted, although in Korea — and this adaptation, sponsored by Netflix, largely went under the radar for most people as it was barely promoted by the platform.

Even those who watched it, though, complained about how just 8 episodes weren’t enough to cover the long story of its source material.

This, naturally, makes people wonder how much the Viral Hit anime is going to adapt. Even the first part of the story is very long, and it would take multiple cours for the anime to get there. Of course, the adaptation might skip many plot points and just focus on the fights — that happened with The God of High School before — but no one really wants that.

It’s already airing this Spring

Crunchyroll has already released a trailer for the series, and while it’s quite short, we at least get to hear epic music. The anime is already going to air this April. With Viral Hit, Solo Leveling and other announced manhwa adaptations, it seems like we’ll get more anime based on popular Korean series very soon.
