We're Not Talking About Death Parade's Chiyuki Enough, And It's Time to Change That

This girl needs more attention!

Death Parade spoilers ahead!

Death Parade is a psychological thriller that takes place in a mysterious bar, Quindecim, where people are taken after their death to be judged. As the result of this judgment process, they are either reincarnated or sent to oblivion. The story follows a young girl, whose name is later revealed to be Chiyuki.

All people who get into Quindecim have no recollection about their deaths and have no idea where they are and what's happening to them. They are forced to play weird games and face difficult choices to show their true self.

Chiyuki, however, is special. The girl is the only one who remembers everything, and is well aware of her deceased status. Decim, the arbiter of the bar, has no choice but to let Chiyuki stay and help him with the judging process.

Chiyuki's Tragic Past Unveiled

Just like every other story in Death Parade, Chiyuki's is full of heartbreak and drama. The girl used to be a promising ice skater, leading quite a happy and cheerful life. But everything changes when she injures her knee, and can no longer skate. Mentally destroyed by this event, Chiyuki decides to end her life and commits suicide.

Although Death Parade is a type of series that feature new characters in every other episode, Chiyuki remains its main focus. Even though it might look like the girl is in the story just to help Decim understand human emotions better and advance his character development, it's not entirely true. Everyone she meets at the bar influences her a lot; she sees pain, suffering, heartbreak and even a sliver of happiness sometimes. Chiyuki herself also starts understanding people better, which is going to impact her choices later in the story.

Reincarnation and Second Chances

As we've mentioned earlier, Chiyuki knows that she's dead. But she doesn't remember what happened to her and how she died. When the memories finally come back to the girl, she's devastated.

Decim shows Chiyuki her grieving mother, who's completely shattered by her daughter's death. The arbiter gives the girl a choice: she can have another chance and return home in exchange for someone else's life. Despite being completely heartbroken, Chiyuki refuses. Seeing all these people in Quindecim and understanding that everyone has someone they care for, she's incapable of taking somebody else's life.

Everything Chiyuki's experienced in this peculiar bar made the girl appreciate her life and understand human suffering more, even if it's too late for her. Decim decides to send Chiyuki for reincarnation, which might give the girl another chance of living her life. And we can't help but hope that this new life will treat the girl better and she will finally find her peace.
