We Wanted More Marley Exploration in Attack on Titan

We Wanted More Marley Exploration in Attack on Titan

Should the manga have been longer?

Summary:

  • The territory outside of Paradis had a lot of potential when it comes to exploration.
  • The Marley arc focused on characters and forgot about worldbuilding.
  • The Great Titan War would have also been an interesting thing to explore.

Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) used to have incredible worldbuilding. Even the little things looked natural in the series, and you didn’t even pay attention to them because of how fitting they were to the whole concept of the world. We’ve already discussed the worldbuilding better here, but there are still some things about Marley left unsaid.

Marley had so much potential

After Season 3 of the anime, the main mystery of titans and their origins was solved, and it was time to do something with the revealed truth. That’s where the Marley arc starts and introduces a part of the world that has never been explored.

Since the entire area was new, there were so many opportunities and possibilities. We already knew much about Paradis: such things as how the city is constructed, who, where and how lives there. We knew about the wall, we knew about the political structure of the island, and understood how things worked there. But Marley was different.

Characters are more important than the worldbuilding

Isayama decided to focus on the new characters more than on the world they lived in, and this decision has a point. After all, Attack on Titan has always been about its characters and their struggles. It’s a human drama, and the world is there just to provide a setting for this drama. Still, worldbuilding is always important, and we can’t help but wish to learn more about it.

Attack on Titan states that there are other countries and nations living outside of Paradis, but we don’t know much about them. We just know that Marley was the most ambitious one, and wanted to rule everyone with the power of titans. The first episode of the final season shows Marley being at war with another nation. But who are they? Why is there a war? What are they fighting for? The political structure of the rest of the world is unclear. Yes, it might have been unimportant for the overall story, but we can’t help but want to learn more.

King Fritz and the titans are also a very interesting thing. Why would he hide the titans inside the Paradis walls if he never intended to use them? Only to frighten the rest of the world? Why not lie then? It would have been so curious to receive a couple of flashbacks about the Great Titan War, and it’s a bummer we never got that. Fans think that the manga should’ve been at least 10 chapters longer to introduce the world behind the walls better, and we agree with them.
