We live in the world of shounens, though.
Summary:
- Josei series are aimed at the audience of adult women.
- These series are less popular than other genres.
- They also bring in less money than other series.
The fact that a lot of anime fans ask “what’s josei” every time someone mentions this word says it all: this genre is extremely unpopular.
If you’re one of such fans, let us explain the term real quick: it’s a category of manga and anime that refers to series targeted at an audience of adult women. So basically it’s something like seinen series but aimed at women instead of men.
You might have noticed that all the most popular anime and manga series are shounen: Naruto, One Piece, Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and the list goes on and on. A couple of seinen titles such as Vinland Saga or Dorohedoro also get big once in a while. And shoujo (Fruits Basket, A Sign of Affection) are trying to be heard as much as they can. But where is josei?
We don’t even remember the last time a josei series became popular among fans, and this is upsetting.
Why is it so?
The situation is connected with the anime demographics. Anime used to be a niche interest for nerdish boys, thus the popularity of shounen. Then years passed by, and these boys turned into more mature men, that’s when seinen series joined the chat.
The craving for romance has also always been here, and we don’t want to sound sexist, but they are usually targeted at girls, hence the popularity of the shoujo genre. Adult women are the category of anime fans that make the smallest group of anime fans, so it’s obvious that there aren’t that many series for them.
Josei manga sales are the lowest among other series, and they are nowhere capable of standing the comparison to shounen titles. And, of course, companies tend to go where the money is. Josei just won’t bring as much profit as other genres.
Fans are naturally upset because of that. Due to the lack of popularity of josei, this category is full of mid and boring series that are much less enjoyable than other manga and anime giants.
Adult women want to be heard: they're also there and they love anime, too! If you’re one of them, and now want to experience something josei, we have a couple of manga and anime recommendations for you: Kids on the Slope (Sakamichi no Apollon), Chihayafuru, Tramps Like Us (Kimi wa Pet), Polar Bear Cafe (Shirokuma Cafe), Don't Call It Mystery (Mystery to Iu nakare).
All of these have high scores, and we hope you’ll enjoy them!
