You May Be Surprised By How Good This Spring 2024 Anime Actually Is

Another hidden gem you shouldn’t sleep on.

Summary:

  • Expectations for Wind Breaker were rather low.
  • The series pleasantly surprised the viewers.
  • It might be one of the best delinquent anime out there.

When Wind Breaker was first teased, it wasn’t really promising, if we’re being honest. It gave off strong Tokyo Revengers vibes and looked like another generic series about delinquents.

But then the series started airing on April 5, 2024, and it entirely changed the audience’s impression. Turns out, Wind Breaker is an anime about delinquents and fights, indeed, but it has a unique charm that makes you keep watching and wait for new episodes impatiently.

Don’t Let the First Impression Fool You

The first episode was enough to make fans never doubt CloverWorks again: the series looked stunning. The fights were animated materfully, the visuals and character design were eye-candies, and, surprisingly, the story was amusing to follow.

Season 1 is a little over halfway through, but Wind Breaker is already being called (one of) the best delinquent anime out there. Yes, even better than Tokyo Revengers.

The reviews are also surprisingly good. MyAnimeList users give it a 7.90, and we have a feeling that it’ll only get higher in the future, if the quality of the adaptation remains the same. And knowing CloverWorks, there’s a good chance it will.

You Wouldn’t Expect to Like These Characters So Much

Although fights take a lot of screen time in Wind Breaker, it’s actually a story about characters. Exciting action is always a great addition to a series like that, but characters are the true heart of it.

The main protagonist, Haruka, might feel off-putting at first, but the more you see of him, the more you understand his appeal. Wind Breaker is a story of a loner who never saw the point in forming human bonds. He was bullied and banished from society for his unusual looks, but in his new school, no one really cares about them.

Haruka has never been appreciated and cherished, so finally finding people who might actually care about him is challenging to deal with. He has to learn to be loved and cared for, although this concept feels foreign to him at the beginning of the story.

Character dynamics are another thing viewers love Wind Breaker so much for. Characters feel alive and entertaining, and fans find something relatable in almost each of them. They even admit to shedding a couple of tears at some endearing character interactions.

No one expected Wind Breaker to be this good, and it was the series’ advantage. When the expectations are low, it’s easier to surprise viewers. And Wind Breaker does it masterfully.
