10 Extremely Underrated Anime to Watch on Crunchyroll in 2024

There are at least a few here you probably haven’t even heard of.

Want something new to watch on Crunchyroll, but feel like you’ve seen everything popular? Fear not — their catalog has over a thousand different anime. It’s easy to get lost in them, however, so here are some series worth watching that aren’t talked about much (or at all)!

Hinamatsuri

Hinamatsuri has only one downside: it doesn’t have a second season. An anime about a yakuza member taking care of an alien girl might sound weird, but it’s great in multiple ways.

While it is still primarily a comedy, Hinamatsuri has its number of heartwarming moments, showing the characters learning something important about human relationships.

Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You

Do you love shoujo romance? Kimi ni Todoke was one of the most famous examples of the genre at some point. It somewhat fell in popularity due to a lack of a sequel — after two seasons, it was obviously still unfinished. Thankfully, we’re getting a new season this year.

The anime is wholesome, focusing on a romance between a quiet girl who comes out of her shell and a popular boy. Despite a seemingly generic premise, the anime deals with heavy topics such as bullying, and does it in an incredibly tasteful manner.

Combatants Will Be Dispatched!

An adaptation of another light novel series by the author of KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!), Combatants Will Be Dispatched! (Sentouin, Hakenshimasu!) features a similar style of comedy.

That said, it is still surprisingly unpopular. If you want something to satisfy your cravings for KonoSuba before the third season comes out, this is definitely an anime you should at least consider.

Alderamin on the Sky

If you like genius protagonists that use their wits to outsmart everyone, then Alderamin of the Sky (Nejimaki Seirei Senki: Tenkyou no Alderamin) might be the anime for you. For a light novel adaptation, the series features a surprising amount of realistic and sensible tactics.

The pace of the anime is quite slow, but it’s not really about action. The protagonist, Ikta, is extremely lazy and would rather avoid doing anything at all — but when needed, he will use his genius to bring himself to victory.

Hinomaru Sumo

While sumo is a very popular sport in Japan, we rarely see anime series that focus on it. If you thought it’s something that isn’t very entertaining in the anime form, you’re actually wrong — and Hinomaru Sumo (Hinomaruzumou) proves that.

The anime makes this unique sport extremely fun to watch — in a classic shounen sports style. It also has two great openings that were very popular during the time it was airing.

Bartender

Yes, there’s an anime about a man making a perfect drink for every one of his clients. This might sound like an absurd premise, but it works surprisingly well — Ryuu Sasakura, the eponymous Bartender, listens to people’s troubles and provides them with an honest perspective of an outsider.

The 2006 Bartender anime isn’t even the only adaptation of its own manga. In Spring 2024, a new series is coming out — and fans are sure it will be on Crunchyroll as well.

Sound of the Sky

Sound of the Sky (So Ra No Wo To) is a very unique slice-of-life anime. At first, it seems like your typical music-related series, just set in the military — but you couldn’t be more wrong if you assumed so.

The series actually has a beautiful anti-war message, and the cast consists of surprisingly well-written characters who all have something going on.

The Case Files of Jeweler Richard

 - image 8

Perhaps one of the oddest mystery anime to come out in recent years, The Case Files of Jeweler Richard (Housekishou Richard-shi no Nazo Kantei) focuses on a young jewelry appraiser who utilizes his skills to solve cases.

While that might seem like a generic setup for a detective anime, the topic at hand is interesting enough by itself. What’s even more surprising is the fact that the anime explores relationships between humans in a mature and realistic way, something many other mystery anime fail to do.

Full Metal Panic!

Years ago, Full Metal Panic! was one of the go-to recommendations for anime. It still stands the test of time: while the art might feel a bit dated, the anime itself is very solid — fans especially like Fumoffu, the comedic spin-off.

The fourth season actually came out a few years ago, and we need just one more to actually finish the main story.

Trigun Stampede

The original Trigun series is a classic that many old otaku still remember fondly. It’s natural for viewers to be wary of remakes, especially when the original was already good. Thankfully, Trigun Stampede is the kind of remake that is great on its own — it’s still Trigun that fans love, but it’s also different enough that it feels like something new.

Some fans dismiss the anime because of how it looks. Yes, it’s made in 3D CG, but it’s actually good here — and even if you don’t particularly care about the looks, it’s a fun story anyway.
