JoJolion gets an English release in 2027, six years after the longest JoJo part ended in Japan
Viz's deluxe hardcover arrives a year after Netflix's Steel Ball Run anime, the part that ended in Japan one month before JoJolion began.
JoJolion, the eighth part of Hirohiko Araki's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, is finally getting an official English release. Viz Media announced on Friday that volume 1 arrives in summer 2027 as a deluxe hardcover with colour pages, Anime News Network reports.
The manga ended in Japan on August 19, 2021. It is the longest-running part of the whole series, and English readers will start it more than sixteen years after its first chapter.
The longest part, the longest wait
According to Wikipedia, JoJolion ran in Shueisha's monthly seinen magazine Ultra Jump from May 19, 2011, to August 19, 2021. That makes it the longest-running part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. It was collected in 27 volumes.
- First chapter in Japan: May 19, 2011.
- First volume in Japan: December 19, 2011, numbered as volume 105 of the overall series.
- Final chapter: August 19, 2021.
- First English volume: summer 2027. Wikipedia lists it for the third quarter of 2027.
In the series chronology, JoJolion is followed by Part 9, The JoJoLands.
One month after Steel Ball Run
Viz's announcement pitches the book as "set in the same alternate universe as Steel Ball Run". The timing in Japan was almost seamless:
- Steel Ball Run ran in Ultra Jump from March 19, 2005, until April 19, 2011, after starting in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2004 without any announced link to JoJo. Its 95 chapters became 24 volumes, numbers 81 to 104.
- JoJolion started in the same magazine on May 19, 2011, one month later.
In English, the gap is much longer. Viz released the first volume of Steel Ball Run in May 2025, fourteen years after it ended in Japan. JoJolion follows two years later.
Volume 105
JoJo keeps two counts at once. Each part restarts its own volume numbering, a habit that, according to Wikipedia, began with Stone Ocean, while the overall series keeps counting. Steel Ball Run's 24 volumes are numbers 81 to 104 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. JoJolion's first volume, published in Japan on December 19, 2011, is number 105, and its 27 volumes take the overall count to 131.
Viz's edition will be volume 1, in hardcover, with colour pages. In Japan, that volume has been on shelves for almost sixteen years.
The anime got there first
The order of arrival is now upside down. David Production's anime of Steel Ball Run, announced at the JoJoday event on April 12, 2025, began streaming worldwide on Netflix on March 19, 2026, with its second stage premiering on September 25, 2026.
So in 2026, viewers outside Japan can watch Part 7 on Netflix, read it in English since 2025, and wait until 2027 for the first official English volume of the part that comes after it.
What JoJolion is about
JoJolion is set in Japan in 2011, in Morioh, a coastal town affected by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. After the disaster, strange formations called the Wall Eyes appear near the coast. Yasuho Hirose finds a naked man underneath one of them. He has retrograde amnesia, and the story follows his search for his own identity as Josuke Higashikata.
- His Stand: Soft & Wet, which produces soap bubbles that steal a property from whatever they touch, such as a person's eyesight or the friction of a floor.
- Its later form: Soft & Wet: Go Beyond, which fires bubbles carrying the Spin from Steel Ball Run.
- The title: Araki explained on the inside cover of volume 2 that "-lion" comes from both the Christian idea of blessing and the gospels, "evangelion" in Greek, and from the myth of Pygmalion. In volume 1, he described the story as the solving of a "curse".
Morioh is familiar to JoJo readers, but this is a different version of the town, in the alternate continuity that began with Steel Ball Run.
The rest of Viz's summer 2027 slate
JoJolion was the last item in a longer announcement. Viz also revealed a complete 25-volume box set of Julietta Suzuki's Kamisama Kiss, with a double-sided poster and a mini artbook, and new licences including His Sweet Solace, Under Doctor, Someone Hertz, Belladonna's Lover and Sakane Toyobayashi's Bus for Two.
What is still unknown
- The release schedule after volume 1. Viz has not said how fast the 27 volumes will follow.
- The price and page count of the deluxe hardcover edition.
- Whether The JoJoLands follows. Viz's announcement covers only Part 8.
- Whether JoJolion gets an anime. David Production animated the previous installments, including Steel Ball Run, but nothing has been announced for Part 8.
JoJolion started in Japan a month after Steel Ball Run ended. In English, it starts two years after Steel Ball Run's first volume and a year after Steel Ball Run's anime.
