Episodes 49 and 50 were delayed to improve quality. ANN and Wikipedia disagree on the broadcast dates by a day.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War is about to finish. Episodes 49 and 50, the last two of The Calamity and of the whole adaptation, air this week and next after a delay, and the franchise's official YouTube channel released what it calls "the last" promotional video on Friday, Anime News Network reports.

The staff explained the delay as a chance to improve the quality of the anime as it heads into its climax. The original Bleach anime ran from 2004 to 2012, while the manga was still being published. The adaptation of its ending has now been pushed back by a few more weeks.

A finale on two different dates

The broadcast dates depend on the source. ANN gives October 19 and October 26. Wikipedia gives October 20 and October 27, and says both episodes were delayed to improve production quality.

Either way, the finale comes several weeks later than a weekly run from the premiere would have ended. The Calamity has ten episodes and premiered on July 25 on TV Tokyo at 11:00 p.m. JST, with Japanese streaming from noon the next day. In the weeks before the delayed episodes, a "climax selection" of earlier episodes aired in their place.

Four cours, four years

According to Wikipedia, the adaptation has been split into four parts with long breaks between them:

  • The Blood Warfare: 13 episodes, from October 11 to December 27, 2022.
  • The Separation: 13 episodes, from July 8 to September 30, 2023.
  • The Conflict: 14 episodes, from October 5 to December 28, 2024.
  • The Calamity: 10 episodes, from July 25, 2026, to the delayed finale.

That adds up to 50 episodes. Wikipedia's infobox currently lists 48, the number aired before the delay.

The breaks grew longer as the story went on. The gap between the first and second parts was about six months. The gap between the second and third was a year. The last one, from December 28, 2024, to July 25, 2026, was almost nineteen months. Against that, the few extra weeks for episodes 49 and 50 are the shortest wait of the whole adaptation.

The last three parts also carry Japanese subtitles: Ketsubetsu-tan for The Separation, Sokoku-tan for The Conflict and Kashin-tan for The Calamity. The series premiered on TV Tokyo and its TXN affiliates, with series composition by Taguchi and Masaki Hiramatsu.

A finished manga this time

The Thousand-Year Blood War is the final arc of Tite Kubo's manga, and the new anime covers it through to the ending. The original series ran from 2004 to 2012; the return was announced in March 2020, during the Bleach 20th Anniversary Project livestream, and confirmed in November 2020 as a television series adapting the entire arc.

One difference matters more than the gap. Wikipedia notes that the original anime was produced while the manga was still being published. This time the story is finished, and Kubo serves as general supervisor of the adaptation.

Who made it

  • Directors: Tomohisa Taguchi and Hikaru Murata, with Mitsutoshi Satou on the first two parts and Chen Dali on the third.
  • Animation: Studio Pierrot for parts 1 and 2, Pierrot Films for parts 3 and 4.
  • Music: Shiro Sagisu.
  • Cast: Masakazu Morita leads, with Noriaki Sugiyama, Yuki Matsuoka, Hiroki Yasumoto, Fumiko Orikasa and Kentaro Ito.
  • The Calamity's songs: jo0ji performs the opening, "I-BULL"; 9Lana the ending, "Rasen" (Spiral).

The West saw it first, at least partly

Viz Media and Fathom Entertainment screened the first three episodes of The Calamity in US theaters from June 25 to 29, ahead of the July premiere in Japan, in Japanese with English subtitles and with the English dub.

In the US the series streams on Hulu, and internationally outside Asia on Disney+, a deal Viz announced in October 2022. The English dub began streaming in November 2022, and reached broadcast television on Adult Swim's Toonami block from May 18, 2025.

What is still unknown

  • The exact broadcast dates, given the one-day difference between ANN and Wikipedia.
  • How much the delay changed. The staff have spoken about quality, not about specific scenes.
  • When the final episodes reach Hulu and Disney+ and the English dub.
  • Whether the ending departs from the manga. Kubo supervises the adaptation, but the announcements say nothing about changes to the final chapters.
  • Whether a Toonami broadcast of The Calamity is scheduled. The earlier parts reached the block from May 2025.
  • What comes next for Bleach on screen, once the manga has been fully adapted.

Bleach waited from 2012 to 2022 for its final arc to be animated. After four years and four cours, it now waits a few more weeks for the last two episodes.
