5 Anime to Watch on Crunchyroll if You Like Shangri-La Frontier

Want a fantasy adventure with mostly low stakes? Look no further.

If you’re caught up with Shangri-La Frontier, you may want to watch something similar instead of waiting a week. That said, you can just read the web novel, which is hundreds of chapters ahead of the anime.

But if you want specifically a similar anime — and have a Crunchyroll subscription — here are some series that you can watch.

Full Dive RPG

Full Dive: The Ultimate Next-Gen Full Dive RPG Is Even Shittier than Real Life! (Kyuukyoku Shinka shita Full Dive RPG ga Genjitsu yori mo Kusoge Dattara) is another anime that focuses on a VRMMO adventure — and just as Shangri-La Frontier, it deals with the topic of “kusoge” — shitty, badly designed games.

In both series, the protagonist wants to clear the game, although in Full Dive RPG it’s more out of spite than anything else — and both are mostly comedic and light-hearted in tone.

Bofuri

If you want another anime where the main character is playing a VRMMO game in a very unconventional way, you can try BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense (Itai no wa Iya nanode Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu).

Kaede Honjou — or Maple, as she is called in game — really doesn’t like getting hurt, so she is playing a defense-only build. The anime is a blend of comedy and action, and in both this and its premise, it’s a solid recommendation to Shangri-La Frontier. Bofuri has more slice-of-life moments, though.

Log Horizon

Log Horizon is a “stuck in the game” anime, so you’d think it would have some sort of Sword Art Online-like “if you die in game, you die in real life” mechanic. That’s, however, not the case — you simply respawn.

As such, the characters of Log Horizon don’t really try to escape or anything — they mostly just hang out and go on adventures. There are some politics involved, but in general, the anime is pretty lighthearted.

KonoSuba

Being initially a parody, KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!) quickly got a lot of fans among those who love fantasy adventure anime. While the anime focuses on humor most of the time, there are genuinely good fight scenes, and the overall vibe of adventure is very appealing.

Despite being an isekai, not a VRMMO game anime, KonoSuba is still similar in its style of comedy and execution to Shangri-La Frontier. With its third season coming very soon, right now is a great time to watch it.

Infinite Dendrogram

Yet another VRMMO anime, Infinite Dendrogram is a more serious take on the genre. While there’s still no “death game” aspect (thankfully), the plot is a bit more serious and focused than in Shangri-La Frontier. That said, it doesn’t really have high stakes in the end: it’s just an interesting adventure anime.
