The season is about to start — time to get in the mood for some anime.
5. My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU
Most of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru) doesn’t actually take place during the winter — before the last season. However, that is the most climactic part of the show, the build-up to it is perfect in itself. One of the romcom staples with a fun cast, this anime goes full romance in the end — and the winter season in which it happens is a perfect fit for the show.
4. ef: A Tale of Memories.
A lesser known anime by studio Shaft, ef is a collection of stories that are connected together. A lot of it takes place in winter, and the season is depicted beautifully. The stories range from mostly innocent (if dramatic to an extent) to surprisingly mature and even dark. To get the full picture, however, you’d need to watch both seasons — not that the second one is worse in any way. The abstract visuals and amazing music by TENMON only make the anime better.
3. Kanon
Most of you have probably heard of Clannad. Kanon is another work by Key, Jun Maeda’s visual novel studio. While it is way less popular, it isn’t actually worse — some may argue it is even better than Clannad. It is ultimately a question of personal opinions, but one thing is true for sure: Kanon is a great romance anime, and it becomes an even better watch during winter, as the scenes are done beautifully. Just remember to watch the 2006 version by Kyoto Animation.
Toradora! is perhaps the ultimate Christmas anime. It even has a Christmas song sung by the characters! Being a show that largely influenced the later generations of romcoms, it is still recommended as a staple of the genre to this day. It is absolutely worth it, as well, especially if you watch it during winter. There’s just something extra comfy about sitting there watching it while it's snowing outside.
1. White Album 2
White Album takes the love triangle formula and absolutely perfects it. A more mature take on a school romance drama, White Album 2 has everything from moments of melancholy to heartbreaking scenes that will make you cry — and everything it does, it does perfectly. Accompanied by amazing music, it can be confidently called the “melodrama done right” of anime. And no, you don’t actually need to watch the first one, though it is also good.
