5 Extremely Disturbing Anime to Give You Shivers (Don't Watch These Before Sleep!)

These are definitely not made for children.

It is often said that we love horror stories because of the strong emotional responses we get from them. Finding something disturbing is fascinating like that — and here are 5 anime that definitely excel at that.

Higurashi: When They Cry

Higurashi: When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) is basically the poster child for horror anime. Known for its insane violence and detailed gore, it will definitely not help you sleep better.

The gore is not the only selling point, though. The anime is genuinely a good psychological mystery, where you will question the sanity of everyone — and the reality of what’s even shown. It takes two whole seasons for the pieces of the puzzle to fall into place, so be patient.

Happy Sugar Life

Happy Sugar Life is about Satou Matsuzaka, a yandere obsessed with a preschool-age girl. Just this premise is enough for the anime to make the list — it’s incredibly creepy.

Satou is arguably not even the most screwed up character in the series — there are many who are even worse. The anime is a psychological study of these people and their twisted definitions of “love”, and it doesn’t try to excuse any of them. As you might have guessed, there’s nothing actually happy about it.

Perfect Blue

Perfect Blue is directed by Satoshi Kon. That name alone holds some weight, especially for the more experienced otaku. Considered by many to be his best work, Perfect Blue is very uncomfortable to watch on many levels, but also incredibly worth it.

Dealing with themes of identity and reality, the movie explores the twisted nature of the entertainment industry. It’s a piece of art and a beautiful one.

Monster

Monster is a long story, but the premise is mostly simple. A doctor saves the life of a boy— who ends up a terrible human being and a cold-hearted murderer when he grows up.

Following doctor Tenma trying to catch the so-called “monster”, the anime makes you think about human nature. It makes sense that the conclusions it drives the viewer to can be found uncomfortable by many.

Shadow Star Narutaru

What happens if you take the “summoned monster pet” idea of Pokemon and Digimon and try to make it as edgy as possible? The answer is Shadow Star Narutaru (Narutaru: Mukuro Naru Hoshi Tama Taru Ko), an anime that is definitely obscure, and for a good reason.

Shadow Star Narutaru is so twisted that it is somewhat infamous, with many otaku being unable to stomach it at all. It deals with themes like bullying, abuse and child murder. To give you the perspective of how dark it gets, the manga was censored and then canceled altogether when published in the US. Definitely not something suitable for the general audience.
