Mushishi is about a Mushi master traveling around a pseudo-historical setting and helping people with minor problems that are created by primitive and not exactly corporeal beings, Mushi. Mushi are troublesome, but they are not horror-inducing. The series is the non-horror title of this list, specifically for the people who prefer mystery without horror. Please enjoy!
The Promised Neverland is a rather grim series with mysteries to be discovered about the world because the point-of-view characters are lied to about it as they are brought up to be consumed by demons. It is a horror series, and the first season is arguably a lot better than the second, but at least the first season is still worth a watch.
Mononoke
Like Mushishi, Mononoke follows a wandering man, in this case, a medicine seller, who can help people with supernatural troubles. Unlike Mushishi, Mononoke is a full-blown horror series. In it, the medicine seller helps others to get rid of mononoke, which are unnatural spirits that remain in the human world due to negative emotions. The seller has a sword and all the knowledge he needs to solve each episode’s mystery and banish mononoke from existence.
Erased
Erased is about a man who has a mysterious ability to make himself, or at least his consciousness, go back in time to prevent a life-threatening situation. During one of such situations, when his mother is murdered, his consciousness is sent 18 years back, and he gets to prevent more than his mother’s death. It is a short mystery series that can be binge-watched in a few hours.
Made in Abyss is a post-apocalyptic mystery series about a strange, very mysterious abyss. People, who live in a city next to it, are exploring the abyss. It holds a lot of artifacts from a past civilization, which might be very helpful! But descending can also cause a disease that is not always cured. Riko is the main character of the anime, and her mother never returned from one of her raids into the Abyss. Despite that, Riko wants to be one of the Raiders, explore the abyss, and earn the title of a White Whistle, a legendary Raider.
Overall, Halloween anime does not have to be scary. But a horror mystery is also a great combination, and we hope that you have found something for yourself on this list.
