They’re releasing 200 epiphones that look like their luxurious Les Paul Custom models.
The sets are sold for $846 via lottery, and you only have until November 26th to join.
The musical instrument manufacturers know full well that anime has the power to attract people to new hobbies and experiences. Back in 2012, the success of the musical slice of life series K-On! alone drastically increased the imports of electric guitars to Japan. And over the years, musical instrument manufacturers had multiple anime collabs, including Fender x Neon Genesis Evangelion, ESP x BanG Dream! and Squier x Hello Kitty.
And of course, the newest big hit in the music anime genre Bocchi the Rock! had always been a contender for a similar collaboration — like at the start of 2023, when it had a collab with Yamaha, Steinberg, Ampeg and Marshall. Though there had been news that Gibson Brands Japan also threw their hat into the ring.
Bocchi rocks
Bocchi the Rock! is a story about a socially anxious wreck of a girl joining a rock band. It follows the K-On! formula — two thirds comedic slice of life (this time, even more relatable! #girlfailure), one third band practice, management and administration. With the music anime genre being almost unilaterally about idols in recent years (even the greats like Zombieland Saga), it was no surprise Bocchi’s misadventures were noticed by the audience.
And of course, just like K-On! and Hibike! Euphonium before, and despite its source being a 4-koma manga, Bocchi the Rock! pays special attention to the musical part of the equation, including musical composition and the instruments. And one of such instruments is Bocchi’s trusty black guitar.
The Gibson collaboration
We have it on good authority that the guitar that Bocchi got from her father and had been playing through the series is Gibson Les Paul Custom — one of the higher-end electric guitar models, made either in mahogany, or mahogany and maple. So of course, Gibson Brands Japan stepping in for an official collaboration named "Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Les Paul Custom BOCCHI EDITION." only makes sense.
Epiphones are, essentially, less luxurious cousins to Gibson guitars (mostly in regards to their materials and/or finish) — you can expect to pay $5 000 (or even more!) for a guitar that looks similar to Bocchi’s. Still, the special edition epiphone looks just as amazing as the original guitar, and with an amazing twist — its face includes a special plate autographed by Bocchi herself! And it comes with a Kessaku Band x Epiphone gig bag as well!
Only 200 sets of this precious collector’s item are released, for the price of 128,000 yen ($846). These sets are already sold via lottery on ANIPLEX+ from November 15th to November 28th, and the winners of these sets will be announced on December 6th. If you are planning to participate, we wish you the best of luck!
