Attack on Titan’s Ymir Connection to Mikasa and Historia, Explained

Attack on Titan’s Ymir Connection to Mikasa and Historia, Explained

Why did it have to be Mikasa at the end?

Summary:

  • Fans thought that Historia would play a major role in the finale.
  • Both Mikasa and Historia had connections to Ymir.
  • Mikasa had to be the center of the finale for it to work the way it did.

The question of whether Historia was supposed to be more important for the finale has been discussed many times already, but fans keep finding new parallels between her and the Founder Ymir, who became the center of the Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) ending.

Seasons 2 and 3 were very important for Historia’s character development since it was back then when she turned into an important figure in the series instead of a side character with little to no screen time.

There are some connections

Fans have also noticed a couple of connections between her and Ymir. Historia was reading a book about Ymir when she was a little girl, and she wanted to be just like her.

There are some visual parallels with both of them sitting on a porch while pregnant, or frames of them carrying similar barrels as well as portraying them next to a mysterious spine-like creature.

They both got pregnant as a way of a strategic move, not out of love. On top of that, fans have pointed out a peculiar idea that Ymir’s children were born at the beginning of the Titan Era while Historia’s child was born outside of it.

These small things, along with Historia’s importance in Seasons 2 and 3 as well as her relationship with Eren, led people to believe that she was to play a major role in the finale. Which, as we know, never happened.

Mikasa’s connection to Ymir is even more transparent. Both girls were in love with a person who hardly reciprocated their feelings. Ymir’s love turned her into a slave and made her existence miserable. Mikasa’s love for Eren was obsessive and unhealthy and was torturing her.

That’s why Mikasa’s sacrifice was the thing that finally made Ymir open her eyes and break the Titan Curse.

Historia and Mikasa’s relationships with Eren were different, and they impacted the story in different ways. While Historia saw the monster Eren was becoming and became an accomplice to him, Mikasa chose to stop him no matter how hard it was for her.

That’s why it was exactly Mikasa who had to be the center of the finale, and not Historia. Without Mikasa’s sacrifice, Ymir would have never realized that being a slave is not the only option for her. Mikasa mirrored the Founder and showed her another way.

While there might have been certain things that Ymir saw in Historia, too, this connection would have never worked for the finale because Historia wasn’t ready to sacrifice Eren. She chose to support him, while Mikasa chose to save the world.
