Another season of the anime, perhaps?
Summary:
- Call of the Night manga ended with chapter 200, but there’s a hint that there’s going to be an announcement regarding the series in March.
- Some fans believe the anime is going to receive another season.
- Season 2 is unlikely to air this year — and won’t adapt the rest of the manga anyways.
Kotoyama’s Call of the Night (Yofukashi no Uta) manga has finished publication in the latest issue of the Weekly Shounen Sunday magazine. However, it doesn’t seem to be the last time we see the characters: the last chapter had a hidden message hinting at a future announcement regarding the series.
A surprise announcement
The announcement, scheduled for March 11, surprised many manga readers. March 11 is a Monday, which is not when the magazine releases its new issues. This led many fans to speculate on what this announcement might mean: it’s unlikely to be a sequel manga, but a continuation of the anime adaptation is possible.
The anime adaptation aired in 2022 and was very warmly received by the viewers. Praised for its nightlife atmosphere, it quickly gathered a decently large following — and made the manga even more popular.
Another thing the anime was praised for was the use of music by the hip-hop duo Creepy Nuts. Their song “Yofukashi no Uta,” which inspired Kotoyama to write the manga in the first place, was even made into the ending of the adaptation.
Speculations about S2
A second season of the anime would be a dream come true for manga fans. While the first season was great, the common consensus is that the anime didn’t even get to the best parts of its source material.
However, LIDENFILMS is already making three anime this year — four, if we assume the sequel for the 2023 adaptation of Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan is made by them just like the first season. If we get a second season for Call of the Night, it probably won't be in 2024.
That said, another season definitely wouldn’t be enough. The manga finished at 200 chapters, while the anime only adapts 46 of them in 13 episodes — and it skips some content, as well. While another season would make fans happy, it would be far from a complete adaptation.
Confusing finale for the manga?
On the one hand, fans enjoyed the finale of the Call of the Night manga. On the other hand, some of them found it too open-ended and ambiguous. It’s not the first time Kotoyama does this: the ending for their other series, Dagashi Kashi, was also like that (although in the case of Call of the Night, the execution is much better).
