Chainsaw Man’s Reze Arc Has Made 29.7 Billion Yen, and One Headline Rounded It Down to 20
The Reze Arc film reached Prime Video on 19 September carrying a worldwide gross of ¥297億. That is ¥29.7 billion, not ¥297 billion — and one outlet's headline undersells its own body by about ten billion yen.
Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc started streaming on Prime Video on Saturday 19 September, as a subscription exclusive, and every write-up carries the same figure: ¥297億 worldwide.
Which is ¥29.7 billion. Not ¥297 billion. The 億 counter is a hundred million, so an English writer reading ¥297億 as "297 billion yen" inflates the number tenfold.
One outlet managed to get it wrong in the other direction, in its own headline, directly above its own correct sentence.
The headline and the body, from the same page
Headline: 「世界興収200億円超」 — worldwide box office over ¥20 billion.
Body: 「世界興行収入297億円（2026年6月19日時点）を突破し」 — worldwide box office of ¥29.7 billion, as of 19 June 2026.
A gap of roughly ¥9.7 billion, on one page, published the day the film hit streaming. "Over ¥20 billion" is technically true of a film on ¥29.7 billion. It is also the kind of true that costs a film a third of its result.
What the figures actually are
Every number below is 興行収入 — box office gross, the modern Japanese standard. None of it is 配給収入, and none of it should be converted at a single spot rate.
- Worldwide: ¥297億, as of 19 June 2026. That date matters: it is three months old, and every September article still quotes it.
- Japan: ¥108.1億, as of 29 March 2026, per Kogyo Tsushinsha — 45th on Japan's all-time chart, having passed Toy Story 3's ¥108億. The next rung is Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End at ¥109億.
- Six days earlier it stood at ¥107.9億, 46th all-time, 185 days into its run.
- It cleared ¥100億 within 103 days of its 19 September 2025 opening — so around 30 December 2025, not in January — on about 6.55 million admissions, from 421 screens including 60 IMAX.
- Toho's initial target was ¥50億. It passed that inside a month.
No newer domestic figure has been published since March. September's coverage quotes only the worldwide number, and the worldwide number is from June.
Rungs that do not exist
Three milestone figures circulate in English write-ups of this film's run and none of them turned up in any Japanese source: ¥35.8億 in October 2025, ¥102.8億 tied for 48th with Evangelion: 3.0+1.0, and ¥104.3億 at 47th.
They may be real. They are not sourced. What is sourced at that stage of the run is ¥107.9億 at 46th, which is a different rung entirely.

Streaming before disc
The Prime Video release arrived with no Blu-ray on shelves — the streaming window opened first, which for a Toho theatrical anime with this kind of result is not the usual order.
A year and a day from its 19 September 2025 opening, the film went from cinemas to subscription streaming without passing through a physical release. That is the actual news in the announcement, and it is the part nobody led with.

The counter that keeps eating a zero
億 is the unit that breaks English-language anime coverage, reliably, every time a Japanese film does well. ¥297億 is a large number written compactly. Read it as billions and you have a film out-grossing anything ever released anywhere; read it correctly and you have a very successful adaptation sitting somewhere in Japan's all-time top fifty.
The outlet that got it backwards did not misread the counter. It read it correctly in the body and then wrote a headline off a number that was three rungs down. Which is the more interesting failure: not arithmetic, just nobody checking the top of the page against the middle of it.
