One of the most popular webtoons is getting its own anime adaptation.
Hybe recently announced an anime adaptation of their webtoon Dark Moon: The Blood Altar. The main characters are based on Korean idols from the Enhypen group. The anime adaptation will be made by the company that worked on the anime Demon Slayer and Fullmetal Alchemist.
We have collected everything known about the upcoming adaptation of the best-selling webtoon.
What Is Dark Moon: The Blood Altar About?
The webtoon Dark Moon: The Blood Altar has 70 chapters, the last one was released in August 2023. The story is set in the fictional city of Riverfield. A girl named Sooha comes here to study.
She quickly becomes a topic of discussion between students from two competing local academies. Young vampires study at the first, and werewolves at the second. With the appearance of Sooha, the usual rhythm of life changes. The girl, like many around her, has supernatural abilities and a mysterious past.
Dark Moon: The Blood Altar is Hybe's most successful webtoon with over 190 million views worldwide.
Dark Moon: The Blood Altar Characters Are Members of the Enhypen Group
In 2024, Enhypen released the mini-album Memorabilia specifically for the vampire webtoon. In the same year, the prequel comic Children of Vamfield was released, which tells more about the lives of young vampires.
The prototypes of the vampires were seven members of the South Korean pop group Enhypen. It was the lore of the video for the song Drunk-Dazed that became the starting point for the creation of the webtoon.
It features a mysterious girl, a school party, and vampire boys. To get a feel for the mystical atmosphere in the best tradition of urban fantasy, just watch the video itself.
Enhypen debuted in 2020 and has already gained a huge fan base around the world. The boy band is backed by South Korea's largest conglomerate Hybe, which has produced such popular groups as TXT, Seventeen and, of course, the main face of the label – BTS.
Dark Moon: The Blood Altar Is in the Hands of Experienced Professionals
The adaptation of the Korean webtoon will be handled by the Japanese production company Aniplex. They have worked on the anime series Fullmetal Alchemist, Demon Slayer and Gurren Lagann.
Dark Moon: The Blood Altar is Hybe's first experience in anime production. The worldwide broadcasting rights have been acquired by Crunchyroll.
The diverse concepts and elaborate lore of Korean music groups fit perfectly into anime genres. Their stories will have room for both romantic shojo and superhero shonen. If the Dark Moon adaptation is successful, other idols are likely to appear in the anime.
Dark Moon: The Blood Altar Release Date
The anime was announced on September 16th at the Aniplex Online Fest in Japan. There is no information about a release date or cast yet.
