Freshly Announced Failure Frame Anime Feels Rather Generic

Where have we heard this before?

Summary:

  • Failure Frame anime adaptation has been announced.
  • The teaser visual is out.
  • The series seems generic and you can’t help but feel like you’ve seen it somewhere else.

Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything With Low-Level Spells (Hazurewaku no "Joutai Ijou Skill" de Saikyou ni Natta Ore ga Subete wo Juurin suru made) is a light novel series written by Kaoru Shinozaki that started in 2018 and is still ongoing. It was adapted into a manga a year later, in 2019, and now an anime adaptation is on its way.

The Failure Frame anime adaptation was announced on January 21, 2024. It will be produced by Seven Arcs (Chained Soldier) and animated by SynergySP, the studio that worked on the recently canceled Ten Count.

Michio Fukuda, who has already worked on such huge projects as Death Note and Bungou Stray Dogs, will be directing the series with Yasuhiro Nakanishi writing the script.

Teaser visual is out

The teaser visual alone makes you think you’ve seen it somewhere before. The protagonist is alone and calling for help, surrounded by weird creatures. The picture gives off intense Solo Leveling vibes, and the resemblance gets even more noticeable the more you learn about Failure Frame.

Touka, the main protagonist, is rated the lowest among his peers. In fact, he even has the same E-rank as Sung from Solo Leveling. Is it going to be another series about the weakest becoming the strongest?

Lack of fresh ideas

The similarity to Solo Leveling is not the only thing that got fans thinking about Failure Frame being generic. You’d never guess the genre of the series! It’s an isekai. And, moreover, the one with an unnecessarily long title. There seems to be a real trend for those lately.

Speaking of the title, fans say they feel they’ve already watched the series after reading it. And the most annoying thing is that there’s an anime with a similar premise coming out almost each season, Solo Leveling wasn’t the first one.

Fans don’t know how to feel about that. It’s not an issue that similar topics are explored in various series. After all, you can always find something new in each of them, and one theme can be executed in different ways (how many revenge stories are there anyway?).

But at the same time, viewers can’t help but desire something fresh and unexplored. They’ve noticed the lack of original ideas lately, and it is very upsetting. Still, they are ready to give Failure Frame a chance, and who knows, maybe it will surprise even the most doubtful ones.
