Fujimoto’s Look Back Anime Movie Announced: New Masterpiece From Chainsaw Man’s Author?

It wasn’t unexpected, but it’s still exciting.

Summary:

  • Look Back is a one-shot manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto.
  • An anime movie has been announced.
  • First visual and video teaser have been released.

Look Back is a one-shot coming-of-age drama manga written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto, whom you might also know as the author of Chainsaw Man and Fire Punch. It was published on Shueisha's Shounen Jump+ in July 2021.

Look Back explores the story of two young and extremely talented manga artists, Fujino and Kyomoto, who seem to be polar opposites.

Fujino is an aspiring mangaka, and her works are considered unmatched by everyone around her. One day Kyomoto’s works receive the highest praise for the detailed artwork, which makes Fujino extremely jealous. But she has no intention to stop, and the competition only makes her work harder.

Movie announcement

The anime movie adaptation of Look Back has just been announced. Seems like MAPPA is not going to adapt all of Fujimoto’s works after all, since Studio DURIAN is working on the project. Kiyotaka Oshiyama (Chainsaw Man, Devilman: Crybaby) is directing the movie.

The most exciting things are the first look at the movie and the release date, of course. Look Back will premiere on June 28, 2024 in Japan, and a first visual and video teaser are already out.

Both feature Fujino working on a manga. We can barely see anything except for the mess in the girl’s room, her concentrated figure and a piece of her face, reflected in the mirror on her desk. The video teaser ends with Fujino standing up and turning around.

Are you excited for the movie?

Fans’ reaction

It goes without saying that fans are super hyped for this project. Fujimoto’s one-shots have been praised for ages, and there was always hope that one of them (or, better, all of them) would get animated one day.

The Look Back movie announcement also got fans talking about other works of Fujimoto again, and they are hopefully waiting for a Fire Punch anime series. But for now, Chainsaw Man and Look Back have to be enough.

The entire manga is rather short, since it’s a one-shot, so it’ll be very curious to know how the movie will be paced and whether it will include any extra scenes.

Look Back is an incredibly touching experience, and readers admit to shedding a couple of tears while reading the manga. That’s why they can’t wait to see it animated and accompanied by the most heart-wrenching soundtrack capable of making them feel even more for these characters.
