Kitarou Tanjou: Gegege no Nazo’s final trailer was released.
Gegege no Kitarou is a treat for all fans of youkai and ghost stories.
The movie will likely go into Kitarou’s dad’s backstory.
Just two days before Kitarou Tanjou: Gegege no Nazo hits the movie theaters in Japan (and to everyone’s disappointment, likely ONLY in Japan), its final teaser trailer, full of horror vibes, suspense and all things paranormal was released:
Youkai boy that lives at a graveyard
Gegege no Kitarou is a story about a youkai boy protecting humans of differing levels of foolishness from the very real and dangerous threats of youkai and paranormal. Always had been — ever since the original manga run in 1965-1986. Since then, the franchise has had many animated adaptations, reboots and reiterations, with the latest one being released in 2018 and introducing the threat of youkai into the messy modern society (including some rather biting commentary on its workings). If you saw Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun (Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun) — this is where its author got the idea from.
So what’s the movie going to be about? Its title could be translated as “The Birth of Kitarou: Mystery of Gegege”. And despite all odds, “Gegege” is not just a funny onomatopoeia — it’s the name of the graveyard Kitarou was born (and lives) at. Additionally, both promotional materials and the trailer itself feature Kitarou’s dad Medama Oyaji, both in his eye form (the tiny eye guy with the tiny body) and human form (the wide-eyed silver-haired guy in a kimono). Which would all indicate that this movie will go heavily into Kitarou’s dad’s backstory, and his ties to the Gegege graveyard.
A bit too late for Halloween
There is little surprise that the movie is done by Toei Animation studio — after all, it’s been doing Gegege no Kitarou adaptations since the very first animated series in 1968. Sawashiro Miyuki (Shina Asado from Sword Art Online, Kurapika from Hunter x Hunter (2011) and Fujiko from Lupin III since 2011) will return as Kitarou’s VA, and the legendary Nozawa Masako (the voice of Narrator in Nichijou, Doraemon and Goku from Dragon Ball) will once again voice Kitarou’s diminutive dad.
It’s a bit strange to see such a perfect tie-in for the Halloween season to be released almost a month too late — though we suppose the celebration is not as big in Japan. Still, this movie will be a treat for fans of Kitarou, as well as horror and Japanese ghost stories enthusiasts. And while there is little hope of catching it in physical theaters, be sure to try to do so when it releases on November 17th.
