Hot Take: Mitsuri’s Story in Demon Slayer Was Just as Sad as Other Characters’

She deserves more respect.

Summary:

  • Mitsuri is treated unseriously in the fandom.
  • Her backstory doesn’t involve loss and death.
  • It’s still very depressing, though.

Out of all the Hashira that we see in Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba), Mitsuri seems to be the most disrespected one. She has this quirky and unserious vibe around her, so we can partially understand this response. But still, we think that this Hashira deserves more.

And it’s not only about the Hashira, to be honest. Everyone has suffered enough in Demon Slayer.

Tanjiro lost his family, Shinobu had great mental issues, Giyu’s sister sacrificed herself to protect him, Sanemi had an abusive father and lost his mom. Even such demons as Gyutaro or Akaza evoke great sympathy when fans hear about their stories. But only Mitsuri is so often made fun of.

Mitsuri’s story is often viewed as just a simple desire to find a husband. And it’s true, she does want one and does want to be loved. She’s the Hashira of Love, after all, and a true romantic at heart.

But the fact that her backstory doesn’t involve loss and death doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to be sad about.

She just wants to fit it

Mitsuri displayed an unnatural strength at a very young age, shocking everyone around her with it. Her physical characteristics demanded her to eat more than average girls, which even resulted in her peculiar hair color. She ate too much sakura mochi, so her hair turned pink.

All of that led to the annulment of her marriage and forced her to pretend to be someone else. She dyed her hair black, pretended to be weak and started eating less. It worked for some time, and Mitsuri managed to attract a new partner, but it didn’t work because the girl started doubting her pretense.

It stopped only when she was approached by Demon Slayers, who told her to be herself and showed her that her power wasn’t a curse, it made her special instead.

It’s true that having to dye your hair or eat less doesn’t sound as terrible as losing a loved one. But it doesn’t make Mitsuri’s story less sad. Death is not the only thing that can break someone.

Mitsuri was trying so hard to fit in her entire life, but she kept getting rejected. And only when she chose to pretend, she managed to find someone who was ready to love her.

She just wants to be loved and belong, and this is something that makes her very relatable for so many people. We understand her and know how tormenting such feelings can be. That’s why we feel like Mitsuri’s backstory was also incredibly heartbreaking.
