How Nagi Became Nagi: Blue Lock - Episode Nagi to Hit Theaters in 2024

The story of finding one's passion.

Summary:

  • Blue Lock is an unusual sports manga that doesn't stop capturing people's hearts after the successful release of the 1st season.
  • In spring 2024 the full-length movie Blue Lock - Episode Nagi will be released.
  • It will probably tell the story of how Nagi and Reo started playing together and how Nagi learned to enjoy playing soccer.

Blue Lock anime broke the world of sports shows last year, because it was extremely different from anything that was released in this genre before. Previously, sports anime focused on teamwork, on the bonds that people form when they strive for the same goal, on the difficulties they face with the support of others. Blu Lock destroyed this canonical premise for the sports shows by openly focusing on creating the most egotistical players and portraying the individualistic mentality of people. And the spin-off called Episode Nagi also follows in its steps.

Second season and a movie

Blue Lock manga now amasses 21 volumes and has been adapted into one very successful season of anime, with the second season already announced and in the works. While we wait for the second season that focuses mainly on the story of Yoichi Isagi, one of the players who was chosen for the soccer battle royale to determine the best striker in Japan worthy of joining the national team that would lead it to the win after the disastrous loss at the 2018 World Cup, we can indulge in the spin-off called Blue Lock - Episode Nagi that would be released in theaters in the spring of 2024.

Peek into Nagi's head

Episode Nagi follows the spin-off manga made by Kōta Sannomiya that now has 16 chapters. The animated version would probably adapt the first twelve chapters, ending right before the Second Selection. Its main character, Seishiro Nagi, is an apathetic, lazy but genius soccer player who prefers to lay around and play games instead of training. But with sufficient motivation he's ready to give it his all. The story focuses on his journey from being not motivated at all and willing to quit this whole endeavor to finding that spark, that thrill that will propel him forward and make him enjoy playing soccer.

Throughout his journey Nagi is followed by Reo Mikage, a person who practically forces him to play soccer with him by becoming his ideal partner and convincing strategist (and also by baiting him with treats). The full-length movie, as the first chapters of the spin-off, would focus on their partnership before the Blue Lock and during the First Selection. Some of the moments copy the ones from the main series, though they are shown from Nagi and Reo's perspective rather than Isagi's, and some side characters that were not given much attention before, like Zantetsu, get to shine.

As the original anime, it's made by Studio 8bit, but the specific release date hasn't been set yet.
