Netflix released a teaser of Terminator: The Anime Series.
The story might take place in the original (pre-time travel) timeline.
The talent behind the series leaves us cautiously optimistic.
In 2024, the Terminator franchise turns 40 years old — and it seems like Netflix has big plans for the celebration. After all, they’ve just released a teaser for the upcoming Terminator: The Anime Series:
Terminator timelines are confusing
Terminator franchise tells the story of a war between humankind and an army of robots led by a superintelligent AI Skynet. The first four movies are set on a continuous timeline: Skynet sends murderous (and progressively more advanced) androids to the past to kill high profile resistance figures (and most importantly its leader, John Connor), with the fourth movie happening more “in the dark present” of the machine uprising. Then, the fifth movie was a reboot of the entire franchise, and to make matters even more confusing, the sixth went sideways to continue the story of the original Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
This, of course, means we can’t guarantee what direction the timeline of the anime will take. It could be a retelling of the original story, its continuation, a continuation of the reboot, a continuation of the sixth movie, or something entirely new.
Or, well, not exactly — we can speculate. The teaser mentions “August 30th, 1997” happening in just two days, and this is the original date Skynet should’ve started its uprising — which did not happen in the original movie timeline, nor in Genisys or Dark Fate. This potentially means that the Netflix series will cover the original timeline of Skynet’s uprising, initially uninterrupted by time traveling shenanigans. Sorta the same way the modern classic Animatrix told us the story of machine uprising in the universe of the Matrix.
The production looks promising
Unlike Crunchyroll’s spotty history of original anime and adaptations, Netflix original anime has plenty of great shows — like Part 6 of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken), Dorohedoro, Beastars and the upcoming Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi), and including such great adaptations as Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Castlevania.
The production is backed by Skydance Entertainment (the studio behind the last two Terminator movies) and Production I.G. (animation and/or production assistance in Pokemon, NieR: Automata Ver 1.1a and Jujutsu Kaisen), with Mattson Tomlin (The Batman, The Sea Beast) serving as executive producer.
Only time will tell whenever Terminator: The Anime Series will join the ranks of amazing adaptations like Castlevania, Star Wars Visions and the Animatrix — though we remain cautiously optimistic.
What could be glanced from the teaser?
