MAPPA is not giving us any information.
Summary:
- Fans feel that MAPPA should have announced the MAPPA Stage event by now, just like they did last year.
- The studio is busy with many projects.
- This whole situation makes fans worried about the Chainsaw Man movie.
Last year, we got a lot of information about the upcoming MAPPA anime projects at the MAPPA Stage 2023 event. The event itself took place in May, but was announced back in March — and, of course, fans expect the same this year.
However, we currently have no information about the event. This worries fans and raises concerns about the status of MAPPA projects — especially the Chainsaw Man Reze movie.
What is MAPPA doing?
We, of course, never had an air date for the movie in the first place. Most fans came to the conclusion that it will probably not come out in 2024, and that the release date of 2025 is much more likely. Still, they feel that by now, we should have received some information — if not about it, then about some other announced projects by MAPPA.
The studio actually has an alarming number of projects they’re working on that we have little to no information on. In addition to the Chainsaw Man movie, they’re working on a couple of other sequels of equal importance.
Of course, the third season of Jujutsu Kaisen is among them, as well as the second season of Hell's Paradise (Jigokuraku). The Dorohedoro sequel doesn’t have a studio announced, but it’s commonly assumed to be them, since the first season was made by MAPPA.
MAPPA is already working on other projects. Lazarus — their collaboration with Shinichirou Watanabe, the Cowboy Bebop director — was announced last year and we still don’t have a key visual. Bucchigiri?! is airing right now. The next season, Boukyaku Battery will adapt a somewhat niche baseball manga — the studio seems to be swarmed with projects.
Why is lack of information bad?
Movies end up being stuck in development hell more often than TV series. Probably the biggest example of this is MAPPA’s own Yuri!!! on Ice movie. It was announced back in 2020, and we still have no information on when — and if — it is coming out.
This has Chainsaw Man fans worried. Yes, the series is more popular than Yuri!!! on Ice, but the fact that the studio has so many projects with little to no news on them is very concerning.
A lack of information about the MAPPA Stage event this year means that it might not even happen. During the past year, there seemingly was a lot of internal restructuring within the studio, which is undoubtedly linked to the animator treatment controversy. This could affect the studio's future projects
