Newest Chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen Robbed Miwa of Any Character Development, and Fans Are Frustrated

Just give her a shotgun!

Jujutsu Kaisen manga spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • A recent chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen rendered Miwa Kasumi useless.
  • Fans see a pattern of Gege squandering potentially interesting characters.
  • While some fans believe that Miwa is done for, others have hope that the specifics of her binding vow may make her relevant sometime later.

Jujutsu Kaisen continues to be one of the manga series that sparks heated discussions every week with the release of a new chapter, and this week was no exception. As the focus shifts from the battle with Kenjaku back to the fight with Sukuna, the sorcerers assess their powers and their possibilities, and alongside some interesting and pretty understandable developments (Kamo willingly removing himself from the fight and fleeing the country with the family because he believes that he needs to protect them first and foremost), there was a moment that left fans frustrated.

Useless Miwa is actually useless, who would've thought

It concerns Miwa and her inclusion in the fight. Or, rather, exclusion, as Gege states that due to her binding vow that she made during the fight with Kenjaku in Shibuya, putting all her power into one blow (and failing it), she is unable to wield her katana anymore and thus she's useless in the current fight with Sukuna.

Lots of people believe that although it was openly stated before, Akutami Gege is once again slandering any potentially interesting characters in the most unsatisfying way (yes, we still remember how he treated Yuki and no, we won't forgive him). Miwa is a pretty controversial character: some fans believe that she's always been useless (including Miwa herself), while others think that she'll be one of those dark horses that may become relevant sometime later, but with the current development it seems that Miwa won't be doing anything that will put her in the spotlight.

There's still hope

Some fans, however, still have a semblance of hope and a sliver of trust and believe that if the binding vow specifically stated Miwa's inability to use a katana, then she'd be able to use any other kind of weapon. This idea is supported by the appearance of Miwa during the Culling Game arc: surely she wasn't that useless if she was able to survive while patrolling Sendai colony, right? Or maybe she's also good at hand-to-hand combat.

But Miwa's cursed technique is based on sword-wielding, so maybe the fact that her binding vow openly states that she cannot use katana, she will be able to utilize some other type of semi-cursed sword to redeem herself and become relevant to the plot once again. The hope lingers despite Gege doing everything to squander it. Then again, he is known for introducing completely unexpected plot twists, so maybe Miwa can be a trigger for one of such events.
