It follows a duo of baseball players, one of whom lost his memory.
Episode 1 was promising, but lacked some things.
Oblivion Battery (Boukyaku Battery) is a fresh sports shounen anime by MAPPA that started airing on April 10, 2024. The series follows a baseball duo of a catcher and a pitcher (or a battery) who enroll in a new school.
Haruka and Kaname are a force to be reckoned with — other baseball players stand no chance against them. However, Kaname loses his memory and has no interest in playing baseball anymore.
Haruka doesn’t want to give up. He follows his friend to another school and makes a promise to get his partner back into the game.
Episode 1 Is Out
The first episode of Oblivion Battery was… okay. It doesn’t do wonders, it doesn’t look hideous — it’s just a nice introductory episode, and that’s it. MAPPA’s production issues weren’t left unnoticed, but it doesn’t spoil the episode much, since there’s hardly any action.
Oblivion Battery is giving off some old-school vibes with its weird humor and peculiar art style. Some odd humorous faces remind fans of Gintama, and this is a good thing. It feels like the anime was made at least 10 years ago, but viewers don’t mind, it actually gives Oblivion Battery a unique charm.
Humor Could Be Better
A lot of the series’ humor is based on Kaname’s behavior. The anime makes it pretty clear: he’s a total dumbass. Fans hope that there’s some character development on its way, since they don’t think they can take another one of his nipple jokes.
There’s an idea that Kaname was done like this intentionally, since he’s definitely about to start playing baseball again, and this is a thing that makes him serious and determined. Let’s just hope that there will be plenty of baseball games that will shut Kaname up at least for some time.
However, not everything is that upsetting, there was a hilarious reference in the series. The thing is that Kaname is voiced by Mamoru Miyano, who’s also the seiyuu of Light in Death Note.
In one of the scenes, Kaname is discussing an upcoming game with Haruka and puts away a notebook titled “Victory Note.” Perhaps it’s just a coincidence, but Death Note fans thought it was a cool reference.
Overall the episode was engaging enough to keep watching and give the series another chance. Although the scores leave much to be desired for now, we can sense the potential in Oblivion Battery and genuinely hope that the series won’t disappoint.
Did you enjoy the first episode?
The anime is not as bad as expected.
