We tell you about anime that deals with life in virtual reality in one way or another. You will see stories of victories and defeats and exciting adventures of heroes in virtual worlds where real life may be at stake.
1. Log Horizon, 2013-2021
The excellent scores of this anime are fully justified: the graphics, the soundtrack, the plot – everything is top notch. The story begins with thousands of players of the popular Japanese RPG getting stuck online.
What was a fantasy game world becomes reality for them – and quite a hard one. A team of three characters – Shiroe, Naotsugu and Akatsuki – set out to find out what happened.
Along the way, they will have to figure out how the rules of the game have changed, build a new life, and understand how to interact with the local NPCs.
2. Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions, 2016
A man named Haruhiro wakes up in an unknown cave. He and all the other people with him remember nothing about themselves except their names.
After they are taken out of the cave and brought to an unknown city, it turns out that they are now all characters in a world called Grimgar. In order to survive, they must become soldiers and fight the monsters that have flooded the area.
The virtual world of the anime is beautiful and original: the artists worked hard on the high detail of the backgrounds, the rendering of shadows and highlights.
3. Btooom!, 2012
Ryota Sakamoto is going through a hard time: he doesn't study, doesn't work, and spends endless hours of his life playing his favorite online game.
In the virtual world of the anime game, Ryota is completely different. He is one of the best players in Japan, a role model for thousands of gamers around the world. One day, his two lives – real and virtual – merge: after falling asleep, Ryota wakes up on an island with no memory of what happened to him.
There is only a bag of grenades nearby, just like in his favorite game, and his hand still hurts from the chip implanted in it to track his location.
4. No Game, No Life, 2014
Shiro and Sora are a brother and sister who lead a reclusive life, disappearing endlessly into online games. They perceive real life in much the same way: just a game with its own rules that they are forced to follow.
But one day they receive a link to a strange website where a stranger offers them a game of chess. The reward for Shiro and Sora is teleportation to the virtual world.
5. Overlord, 2015-2022
When the developers suddenly announce a complete shutdown of the servers of his favorite game, Momonga cannot accept it and decides to go out with dignity: he gathers his minions in a large guild hall and, sitting on his throne, begins to wait for the end.
But instead of dying with the last downed server, Momonga somehow stays in the game – only he is transported to another world and becomes a powerful wizard.
The NPCs around him begin to behave like humans, accepting the player who remains on the server as one of their own. To understand what has happened, Momonga has no choice but to conquer the world of Yggdrasil.
