The latest episode of Sengoku Youko caught fans off guard with a major character dying.
Fans wonder how this will affect other characters.
Manga fans say there are more plot twists further in the series.
Sengoku Youko was hyped up by the manga readers for a while. When the adaptation aired, the reception was mostly positive, although there have been some issues lately. In particular, some fans complained that the anime was getting too predictable, yet Episode 7 completely shattered that idea.
Fans did not expect this
Episode 7 of Sengoku Youko was definitely a huge rollercoaster. It felt like all the characters were given some screen time and development. Fans especially liked the romantic development between Shinsuke and Shaku, and were already prepared to ship them… unfortunately, it was not meant to be.
Near the end of the episode, Shakugan sacrifices herself — turning into stone after Resshin stabs her when she tries to stop a giant boulder from crushing people. This caught many viewers off guard: they didn’t expect a major character death so early in the series.
That said, the writing has been on the wall for the entire episode. A pregnant woman saying she’d name her child after Shakugan — Shakuyaku for the girl and Kagan for the boy — very much felt like a death flag.
Even Kagan approving of the idea of Shaku’s relationship with Shinsuke could count as one, and some viewers probably had an idea where the anime was going.
Still, it still hurt a lot — especially when the very next scene showed the woman giving birth to twins, a boy and a girl. The melody playing over the credits only added to the sadness of the scene.
Prospects for future character developments
This episode made fans absolutely hate Resshin, which is very much justified. Not even his allies like him, and killing off a fan-favorite character this early basically guaranteed him to be one of the most hated antagonists in the series already.
Fans also wonder about the future plot development — specifically, how this is going to affect other characters and their motivations. Most of all this applies to Shinsuke, who was definitely the closest to Shakugan.
This is why the adaptation was hyped up so much
Of course, the manga readers already knew this was going to happen. According to them, the series starts normally and then follows up with a couple of plot twists, getting progressively crazier and crazier every time.
This seems to be the reason fans love Satoshi Mizukami’s works, after all. It seems that many other crazy plot twists await the viewers down the road.
Anime-only viewers were not expecting this.
Spoilers ahead!
