Solo Leveling Episode 6 Takes Character Development to Another Level

Solo Leveling Episode 6 Takes Character Development to Another Level

Is it going a little too fast, though?

Episode 6 spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • Jinwoo had to kill human hunters in Episode 6.
  • He didn’t handle it the same way most anime protagonists do.
  • Solo Leveling developments are rather fast, but very enjoyable.

Solo Leveling (Ore dake Level Up na Ken) continues its amazing broadcast with Episode 6 of the series that aired on February 11, and Jinwoo continues to be the absolute star of the show. As he should, of course.

Even though the ending of Episode 5 made it pretty obvious that the next episode will give us a great boss battle, in which Jinwoo will likely shine and impress the viewers with his fighting skills once again, it still managed to surprise us with something else.

After the boss battle was finished, it was time to deal with the human hunters that betrayed Jinwoo in the previous episode. And viewers were surprised to see a quest log in front of Jinwoo that told him to kill the hunters. Which he did.

No remorse?

This is the first time he kills a non-monster, and this is usually a great deal for characters like Jinwoo. However, he doesn’t seem to be much conflicted. It wasn’t easy for him, of course, but it didn’t take him three episodes to contemplate the choice. If he has to do it to survive, he does it.

This is exactly the most surprising thing. Shounen protagonists aren’t usually like that. Killing fellow humans is a big deal, and we’ve seen countless characters who experience mental torture after having to kill someone. But Jinwoo didn’t show any sign of anguish. It was difficult for him, but not in a “I’m gonna talk about this in 10 upcoming episodes” way.

This sudden development was naturally surprising. It often takes ages for anime protagonists to accept the things they have to or are forced to do. That’s why Jinwoo is so unlike the others.

The story is going really fast

This is not the first time a Solo Leveling development happens too fast but fans admit to enjoying that. We all know Jinwoo is going to level up significantly, we all know he’ll have to get physically and mentally stronger. We even guessed that he might have to kill humans in the future. So why wait?

It feels like Solo Leveling just decided to get straight to the good stuff, and not spend hours and hours on character development. There’s a certain beauty to a gradual buildup, we won’t lie, but the way Solo Leveling is approaching the story and the pacing is very enjoyable and refreshing.
