Season 1 has finished airing; Season 2 has been announced.
Season 1 was just a prologue to the real story.
The season would have benefited from having two cours.
Solo Leveling (Ore dake Level Up na Ken) Season 1 finished airing just a couple of days ago, so it’s time to say goodbye to one of the best series of the Winter season 2024. However, it’s just temporarily since Season 2 has been officially announced.
There are still no details about the sequel. It’s unclear when the season will be released and how many episodes it will have, but the mere thought of it coming one day is enough to cause excitement.
12 Episodes Aren’t Enough
Still, there’s a certain level of disappointment among the fandom, and the reason is the episode count of the first season. 12 episodes aren’t enough, and it feels unfair that Solo Leveling is making fans wait to keep experiencing the story.
It may seem rude and even shameless to ask for another cour now, considering the state of the anime industry and all the conversations about crunch and treatment of animators. But the fact remains: Solo Leveling Season 1 would have benefited from being longer.
It Was Only a Prologue
Although a lot of things have happened in Season 1, it still felt like an introduction. We saw Jinwoo become significantly stronger and evolve a lot. If you look at him in Episode 1 and then in Episode 12, you’ll see two completely different people.
And it’s obvious that his development was crucial for the story. But we can’t shake the feeling that the real story is just about to start. Jinwoo completed the quest in Episode 12 and he’s a necromancer now, which is extremely exciting.
What isn’t exciting, though, is that viewers will have to wait for a year (or even years) to find out what will happen next. Season 1 was just the prologue and even though it was a good one, it’s not enough to understand what Solo Leveling truly is.
That’s why the series would have benefited a lot from a longer season. Of course, production is not an easy thing and anime adaptations take a lot of time and effort. That’s why it would’ve been better as a split-cour season with a small break between them.
On top of that, the series could have started airing this spring, and not in winter, to give the production team more time to finish the episodes.
Still, it’s impossible to deny that a short season did wonders for the adaptation quality. Fans keep praising Solo Leveling for its stunning visuals and great animation, and we don’t know whether the anime would look this good if there were more episodes.
So perhaps it’s not such a bad thing that Season 1 only had one cour. But it doesn’t change the fact that the season would be much more exciting if it were longer.
It’s too early to have a break.
