Spice and Wolf Remake is Coming Out in 2024, but Why Did We Need It in the First Place?

Spice and Wolf Remake is Coming Out in 2024, but Why Did We Need It in the First Place?

And are we going to get more than one season of it?

Summary:

  • Spice and Wolf is one of fan favorites from the 00s, and fans have been asking for S3 for a while — but they’re getting a remake instead.
  • The remake is needed because the original series skipped a volume of light novels.
  • The new anime brings back staff and seiyuu of the original.

Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou) is remembered as one of the most popular anime of the late 2000s. For many years, fans have been asking for the third season — something that the anime industry never delivered. An announcement of another anime project came as a welcome surprise, and we’re getting the new anime in 2024. Except it is not the third season of the anime, but rather a reboot. This was not something many fans expected — let’s see why we actually needed a full remake of the anime.

The first anime was already great, so what’s the point?

The old anime is in no way bad. It’s actually the opposite — it’s really good, with the story and animation holding up to this day. With witty dialogue between Holo and Lawrence, as well as an actually entertaining portrayal of fantasy economics, and with a hint of romance, many fans found something they like about the series. From this perspective, the anime seems perfect as is — and sure, as an anime, it might be perfect. However, as an adaptation of its own light novels, it’s not, which is partly why we never received the third season in the first place.

The anime skipped a very important volume of the novels

The anime adaptation of Spice and Wolf keeps to 2 volumes per season — a far slower (and better) pace than that of many modern shows. The first season adapts volumes 1 and 2, while the second one adapts volumes 3 and… 5 — and there are some scenes from volume 7 between the two.

This created a problem later: certain things that were introduced in volume 4, which was skipped in anime, were very relevant later in light novels. Sadly, the decision to skip the volume came before that revelation, which resulted in fans not getting their desired sequel. It seems that the remake is going to address that — and it might, perhaps, get multiple seasons and maybe even adapt all the novels that are released to this date.

Staff behind the remake

The staff behind the 2024 remake (titled Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf) was involved with the original series. Importantly, Takeo Takahashi, the director of the original two seasons, is returning as chief director for the remake — and Passione seems to be his studio of choice nowadays. The seiyuu behind the main duo are reprising their roles as well. It seems that the creators know what fans want exactly, and they’re trying to deliver. The PV was received largely positively, outside of the excessive use of CGI — let’s hope this remake holds up compared to the 00s anime.
