The Dark History of the Reincarnated Villainess Anime Announced: a New Spin on Isekai?

A new isekai adapted from shoujo manga is coming!

Summary:

  • The Dark History of the Reincarnated Villainess anime has been announced.
  • The series follows a girl who gets transported into the world of fanfiction she wrote herself.
  • It is different from your usual isekai anime in multiple ways.

The recently announced The Dark History of the Reincarnated Villainess (Tensei Akujo no Kuro Rekishi) anime seems to be one of the more interesting upcoming anime projects. On paper, there isn't much to talk about: we have seen many isekai series before, and some of them used the "reincarnated as a villainess" trope as well. However, this one might just be different enough to capture the public's attention.

What is it about?

The premise is actually pretty simple: Konoha Satou is reincarnated into a different world… except instead of an otome game world, like it usually happens in series like this, it is instead a world of her own fanfiction that she wrote as a teen. Predictably, the fanfiction is not a very good one, and Konoha finds herself reincarnated as a villainess who is a character designed to be hated by the audience.

This setup is hilarious if you think about it. It also might be relatable to some fans who are familiar with the fanfiction scene. Most importantly, though, it seems like an unusual and comedic spin on the isekai genre — it has become pretty tiring for many, and even the villainess subgenre, which was novel at first, has basically become a mainstream trend.

This feels different from normal isekai

The manga readers are optimistic about this adaptation. This is the kind of series that is light-hearted enough to make for a good weekly discussion, if nothing else. The character designs are also top-notch, and we're happy to see them in anime.

Curiously enough, the source material here is a shoujo manga.

Most isekai series are adapted from light novels (which are usually the edited versions of web novels), which includes such giants as Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu) and The Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari). Manga adaptations are pretty rare among isekai and often significantly different in format.

Moreover, the fact that it is a shoujo manga is even more curious. Perhaps we are seeing a comeback of shoujo romance adaptations, and this one is serialized in LaLa magazine. Previous adaptations of anime from there include Natsume's Book of Friends (Natsume Yuujinchou) and Maid Sama! (Kaichou wa Maid-sama!).

No info at the moment

Sadly, we have no idea when the anime is getting released — or even who is working on it. The lack of information or even a proper key visual indicates that The Dark History of the Reincarnated Villainess is not going to air for quite a while. Regardless, fans are still hyped for it.
