The Face that Launched a Thousand Imitations

Know your meme: the Yuno Gasai Yandere Face.

Yuno Gasai is a memorable character from the Mirai Nikki who is an absolute yandere. Yandere is usually a term used to describe a character who is obsessively in love (or sometimes obsessively admires someone). As a result of this love, the character often does questionable things, up to and including murder.

Yuno Gasai is considered a great yandere; she is even included as a prime example in the dere types wiki. She is also responsible for the so-called “Yandere Face” trope, which is a visual shorthand meant to communicate that the character pictured is a yandere.

The Yandere Face was created in 2006 by Sakae Esuno, the mangaka, in the form of a panel for her Mirai Nikki manga. However, the Know Your Meme website suggests that it is the 2011 episode of the anime Mirai Nikki that launched the meme due to the unforgettable ending of the episode “Sign Up.” This appears to be true, as the meme typically copies the pose and color scheme of the anime rather than the panel from the manga.

Yandere Face has the character holding their face with both hands, apparently in ecstasy. Yuno has pink hair and eyes, and the whole shot is overwhelmingly pinkish-purple, which many memes reproduce. Yuno blushes and smiles, mostly because in the series, she now has to protect the object of her obsession, Yukiteru "Yukki" Amano in the deadly game that is the main topic of Mirai Nikki. And that means one important thing: now, Yukki needs her. The fact that Yukki is terrified by her is either unnoticed by her or unimportant to her.

Know Your Meme suggests that other names for the meme exist, including Ecstatic Yandere Pose and Yandere Trance. The page also shows that many characters from different anime have been portrayed using that meme, including Neji from Naruto.

Characters outside of anime have been depicted as yandere using the pose, such as Yuri from the game Doki Doki Literature Club, or Miku the Vocaloid. In fact, even some characters from Mirai Nikki have been turned into yanderes using the meme, for example, Akise Aru.

Yuno has clearly claimed her position as The Yandere. Her backstory is not for us to spoil, but if you like yanderes doing crazy things for their beloved (and visibly reluctant) boys and protecting them while being involved in a battle royale-type game, Mirai Nikki has got you covered.
