The Pace of Classroom of the Elite Season 3 is Very Fast, Will It Break the Viewing Experience?

The entire volume in just two episodes!

Classroom of the Elite (Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e) spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • An entire volume of a light novel was adapted into two episodes.
  • Creators want to wrap up the first year this season.
  • We barely saw Suzune Horikita, even though she is considered the second most important character.

Classroom of the Elite is one of the most anticipated shows of this winter. The third season has just started and most viewers are excited, but at the same time it is hard not to notice that the pace of the story is extremely fast — an entire volume of the light novel was adapted in two episodes, when it could have been enough for a whole season.

Was it a mistake to speed things up, and does it spoil the viewing experience?

Training camp is already over

Initially, it seemed that the examination in the mountains would take up most of the season, if not the entire season. However, it is now certain that the creators want to wrap up the first year this season. No wonder events are moving so quickly, as there will only be 13 episodes and three more volumes left.

Many note that Volumes 8 and 9 are not as interesting as the last two. Volume 8, as we already know, is about the test in the mountains, and Volume 9 is about the gossip surrounding Honami Ichinose. Volumes 10 and 11 cover the events of the final exam and summarize Kiyotaka Ayanokoji's first year at the elite school.

Was the fast pace a mistake?

Already after the first episode, fans noticed that the events were moving too fast. The first indicator was the so-called T-Rex scene, which was eagerly awaited by the readers of the light novel. Some events looked questionable — without any explanation, the class of the main characters went up in rank and became C.

The first episode was preparatory — we were told the rules of the new exam and familiar characters were shown. There were no major events, just the characters communicating and preparing for the upcoming competition.

Unlike the first episode, the second one was more intense. However, the exam itself was hardly shown. There might have been a lot of questions while watching because some characters were unexpectedly important to the story due to the fast pacing, such as Akane Tachibana.

The familiar characters, on the other hand, weren't seen on the screen much. We barely saw Suzune Horikita, even though she is considered the second most important character after Ayanokoji.

Of course, the events were shown fragmented, but the missing parts aren't a big problem since they aren't that important for the plot. The character interactions during group activities, games, and competitions are more fun and entertaining than vital.
