There are a few notable dungeon adventure titles this season. Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi) is appealing for its unusual concept. Solo Leveling (Ore dake Level Up na Ken), though criticized for its early episodes, is still a high-quality project with a large-scale story.
The Unwanted Undead Adventurer (Nozomanu Fushi no Boukensha) looks rather simple against its background, but the main character and his story change the whole impression of watching.
Dead at the beginning
The Unwanted Undead Adventurer is about a loner named Faina Rentt. He dies after encountering a dragon while exploring another dungeon. He soon comes back to life, but in the form of a skeleton.
It seems that his life is ruined, as he is now an ordinary monster and can be killed by a simple citizen, not necessarily an experienced fighter. But Rentt doesn't give up and starts to explore his abilities until he becomes a monster of a higher level. Now the hero's goal is to find a way to become more like a human.
The Unwanted Undead Adventurer cannot be called an isekai, although it has certain characteristic elements of the genre, such as death and subsequent resurrection. Although there hasn't been much adventure yet, it's already clear that this will be the main theme of the series.
The first episodes are charming with nice drawings and animations. Of course, there's nothing really outstanding, but the studio Connect that makes The Unwanted Undead Adventurer isn't that big and famous.
Calm characters are the most attractive
In adventure anime, it is very important to have characters that the viewer will find interesting and enjoyable to watch. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) is a good proof of that. Sure, it wouldn't be as popular without its melancholy atmosphere and unusual perspective, but the characters are a big part of the title's appeal.
Despite the circumstances, Rentt remains calm and judicious. These more reserved, rather than hyperbolized emotional characters seem realistic and create a special atmosphere. The initial training and Rentt's first few days in the dungeon were very cozy — the focus was not on duels, but on everyday life in a fantasy world.
Many fans were impressed by Rentt's kind character, especially the moments when he was friendly with Rina. His goal — to become a better and stronger person — is typical of many shonen protagonists, but it seems organic to the sad backstory. Rentt is another example of a good protagonist who can even compete with Frieren.
