Top 10 Anime Openings of Spring 2024, Ranked

We got many unique songs this time.

Most series of Spring 2024 started airing already (yes, there are some sequels that don’t start until May, but they arguably don’t count). As such, fans are wondering how the openings of this season fare.

While the season isn’t as strong as the previous one in this regard, it’s still pretty good — here are 10 of the best ones.

10. Black Butler: Public School Arc

The opening for the new arc of Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) was a pleasant surprise for the fans of the franchise. While the group that is commonly associated with the series, SID, is performing the ending for the anime this time instead of the opening, the opening itself is still good.

Yes, the animation could have been a little better, but it looks and sounds like something that’s been made years ago — and that feel of nostalgia is exactly what Black Butler fans seek.

9. Kaiju No. 8

Since the announcement of the theme song artists, fans have been looking forward to the opening for Kaiju No. 8 (Kaijuu 8-gou). Seriously, it’s sung by YUNGBLUD and produced by a member of Imagine Dragons — Western artists have produced theme songs for anime before, but this one caught many by surprise.

The opening might not be the best fit for the anime, but its very existence is a curious case. This kind of song is not something we’ve heard in anime before, and the visuals are good, too — what not to like?

8. The Irregular at Magic High School S3

LiSA has been one of fan-favorite artists even before the success of Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba). She’s been associated with series like Angel Beats! and Sword Art Online, as well as the first season of The Irregular at Magic High School (Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei).

For the third season of The Irregular at Magic High School, she once again sings the opening song — and it’s just as good as the one for the first one. The series lost a noticeable amount of fans over the years, but at least the song is still good.

7. Mysterious Disappearances

The opening for Mysterious Disappearances (Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi) is really good. In fact, for many, it’s been one of the reasons to start the series — it’s a great mood-setter for a mystery series, and the anime itself is also pretty good.

Both the song and the anime are among the more underrated this season, so if you want a hidden gem, this might be one.

6. KonoSuba S3

As it is usually the case with the openings for KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!) is essentially a mini-episode of the anime that lasts 90 seconds.

It’s a good one, too: it perfectly captures the spirit of comedic adventure in the series, and fans are looking forward to watching it every week.

5. Blue Archive the Animation

For a gacha game as popular as Blue Archive, it was pretty much expected that the animation would be absolutely top-notch.

This can already be seen in the action in the series (although some moments could have been done better), but the opening is absolutely gorgeously drawn — a baffling contrast with a noticeably low-stakes series. Still, it’s a good OP, and that’s what actually matters.

4. Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf

Yes, the opening for the Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou) remake might not match the greatness of the old one. If they actually reused the original OP, it would’ve been the unquestionable #1 of the list — but even the new one is a strong contender for one of the best openings of the season.

While fans were cautiously optimistic about the new theme songs, their concerns have proven to be pointless. The remake OP is perfect for the series, and it encapsulates the “slow-paced fantasy travel adventure” atmosphere of the work itself.

3. Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night

The most hyped original anime of the season, Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night (Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai) has already caught the fans’ attention for many reasons.

One of them is the anime apparently finishing production before it even started airing — the animation and direction are some of the best among modern series. Of course, this extends to the opening as well, and it boasts arguably the best animated sequence of the season.

2. Wind Breaker

An important thing about action anime is getting you in the mood with the opening. With Wind Breaker, the main selling point of it is its fights, the opening being great was a dealbreaker.

Fortunately, it is actually perfect for the series. In fact, both the song and the animation get you hyped up for the actual episode — you definitely don’t want to skip this one.

1. Train to the End of the World

What can we get for the weirdest anime of the season? Of course, the weirdest opening. The song is an absolute earworm, but it being so catchy sparks the contrast between the seemingly cutesy voices and the underlying creepy mystery of the anime.

The visuals help, too — Train to the End of the World (Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku?) is surely bizarre, and its opening showcases that aspect perfectly.
