However, with the release of the second season, many fans were extremely confused: while the first season was a tense revenge story, the second one was far different in both tone and presentation. Well, yes, it was — as it should have been, and it was great because of that.

The second season of Vinland Saga covers the Slave Arc (often dubbed “Farmland Saga” by the fans), which is drastically different from the first arc of the story. The first season was focused on Thorfinn’s revenge upon Askeladd, who killed the former’s father; and with Askeladd’s death at the end of the season, fans wondered what would come next. The second season, however, is much more melancholic in nature, often focusing on Thorfinn’s reflection upon his actions.
Ideas behind Slave Arc
Despite being very different from the first season, Vinland Saga Season 2 is a perfect sequel. One should remember that the manga and anime focus primarily on Thorfinn’s character and his growth as a person — in that sense, the Slave Arc is perfect for his character development.
Einar, who Season 2 majorly focuses on, is integral for Thorfinn’s growth. With both of them working towards their freedom, the anime raises many philosophical questions. Another great point in Season 2 is the contrast between Thorfinn and Canute and their thoughts on war and how to achieve peace — and both of them are directly influenced by the events of Season 1.
A great sequel
While some fans may be disappointed in how Vinland Saga Season 2 turned out, their complaints often lack merit. Yes, there is way less action than in the first season — but when there is, it’s as good as it was, if not better. And besides that, not every arc of the anime has to be action-oriented — it’s an epic tale of one person’s life, after all. Thorfinn still has a long way to go before he gets to Vinland, and this arc was very important for this journey.
