Tired of The Walking Dead and Resident Evil adaptations? It's time to turn to anime.
The popularity of zombies, which brings us new games, movies, TV series and comics every year, has surprisingly bypassed Japan. It is doubly ironic that the most popular series of games about the living dead was born in this country – Resident Evil.
There are few anime about walking corpses, but instead of a depressing and realistic approach, Japanese studios try to use zombies in a more unusual way.
1. Zombieland Saga, 2018-2021
The main character is Sakura Minamoto, who dreams of becoming an idol. She decides to go to the audition, but right at the exit of the house she is hit by a truck while trying to cross the street. Sakura dies, but after some time she wakes up without remembering anything.
The girl learns that ten years have passed since her death and that she herself has become a zombie. She and several other schoolgirls were resurrected to become new idols.
2. Corpse Princess, 2008
An anime perfect for fans of the canonical story of the appearance of zombies. It has everything: the resurrection of the dead, conspiracies and murders.
The main character, Ouri Kagami, grew up in an orphanage under the care of a temple. Here he was taught that the world is not what it seems to be. As a result, he has long been accustomed to the strangeness of events and has tried not to be surprised by anything. But one day, he witnessed an unusual resurrection ritual of a schoolgirl.
After signing a contract with a monk, she has to become the Corpse Princess and kill 108 monsters, because only in this way can she find peace. Kagami decides to find out why the undead are killing people, so now the two have to unravel this story.
3. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, 2016
In Japan an industrial revolution, during which a global pandemic suddenly began. People begin to turn into kabane whose hearts are surrounded by a metal membrane. They can be killed by striking the heart itself.
To protect themselves, people begin to build entire fortresses and live behind walls. But will the inhabitants be able to defend themselves forever?
The series is worth a try, especially if you like adrenaline filled battles. And the zombie concept here is extremely unusual, so fans of the undead who crave originality will be satisfied.
4. Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, 2023
Akira Tendo is an ordinary office worker who is tired of his everyday life and endless office routine. An unexpected salvation comes in the form of a zombie apocalypse, which Akira faces with incredible joy.
Sure, all his friends have turned into zombies who only want to eat him, but now he doesn't have to go to work anymore. Tendo decides to try everything he has put off for so long and makes a to-do list: jump with a parachute, confess his feelings to his beloved, and become a superhero.
5. Zombie-Loan, 2007
Michiru can see death marks on people in the form of a gray ring around the neck. The closer the death, the darker the ring. One day she meets the most popular boys at school – Tachibana and Chika – and sees that their rings are deep black.
Later, Michiru learns that the boys are dead hunters of evil spirits, who did not pass on to another world only thanks to a contract with the organization Zombie-Loan. In return, they are forced to constantly fight other dead people.
