10 Weirdest Schools in Anime and Manga

It's hard to say whether we want to study here or not.

School setting is one of the most popular ones in manga and anime, and it's for a reason, both capitalist and existential. We talked about it in a standalone article, but long story short, school life is an experience that a lot of people can relate to, a lot of the demographic that the stories are targeted at are acquainted with, and it makes the readers or viewers relate to the characters and somehow slightly get back to those youthful times that they lived in.

So even when the authors are willing to explore themes that are not really fitting the school setting, they just invent the school that deals with such matters. And we watch the kids who have to act like adults and solve problems that would be much more fitting for adult characters, but that's the topic for another article.

Here we will explore the most bizarre schools we have ever seen in manga and anime.

Hachimitsu Private Academy — Prison School

 - image 1

At first it feels like it's your regular all-girls school, and initially it was: when it was founded in 1961, it served as a high-ranking sports academy and boarding school for elite young women. But, surprisingly, now this school has a whole prison block for male students, controlled by the Underground Student Council. After the five main characters get accepted into the school, they feel its power on themselves to the fullest.

Hyakkaou Private Academy — Kakegurui

 - image 2

Gamble for your life! This academy is the place where the kids of the powerful individuals gather: students come from the families of politicians, finacists, and others. And their curriculum deviates from standard. A lot of emphasis is put on their people skills, in a daunting way: they're trained to be good at reading people, making deals, and perfecting their poker faces. In order to do that they gamble all day.

Duel Academy — Yu-Gi-Oh! GX

 - image 3

Let's be real: for some time in the 90s and 2000s, a lot of schools basically transformed into card schools when the cards from Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon, and Magic: The Gathering were one of the most prominent school kids possessions. But in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh!, these cards are not just collectibles, they are used in actual battles that can cost you your life. And this school teaches you how to properly wield them.

Kunugigaoka Junior High School — Assassination Classroom

 - image 4

To pass your class at this school you have to assassinate your teacher. Smiley-faced and tentacle-endowed Koro-sensei was once a fearsome assassin who did a lot of bad things in his life and even blew up the moon. Now he says that he'll blow up the Earth, too, if his students won't stop him by killing him. And, of course, he teaches them the art of killing.

Cromartie High School — Cromartie High School

 - image 5

On the one hand, schools created fully for delinquents are quite common in anime. On the other hand, Cromartie High School still stays special, because this school has been created not for a seriously violent shounen show but for a gag story. The students aren't just delinquents: some are rumored to be robots, some uncannily resemble Freddie Mercury, some are plainly animals.

Fumizuki Academy — Baka & Test - Summon the Beasts (Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu)

 - image 6

Remember when your parents either punished you for bad grades or praised you for good ones? Now imagine that but on a school-wide level, and that punishment includes stripping you of basic amenities at school if you end up in class F, but giving you more and more privileges as you climb up to the top. And also kids can summon powerful monster avatars whose power directly correlates with grades.

UA High School — My Hero Academia (Boku No Hero Academia)

 - image 7

Something Charles Xavier would have been proud of — a school for kids with special powers where they are trained to become heroes who will make the world a better place. The school has divisions both for the kids who are planning to do the hero stuff themselves and for those who want to play supporting roles, and is filled with lots of special accommodations for different powers.

Honnouji Academy — Kill la Kill

 - image 8

Your uniform in this school is a sentient alien. What more should we say? Okay, in all honesty, this part of the lore is used to mock the strictness of private schools, but still. If the uniform doesn't like you, it kills you. If it does, it grants you supernatural powers.

Death Weapon Meister Academy – Soul Eater

 - image 9

The school was founded by Death to train both meisters and demon weapons that they wield. Death runs the school and trains kids to reap souls. Weapons pair with meisters and together they need to collect 99 souls so they could achieve Death Scythe level. And the training consists mostly of battles.

True Cross Academy — Blue Exorcist (Ao No Exorcist)

 - image 10

One school raises death reapers, the other trains demon killers. There are a lot of schools focused on exorcism, and we probably should have included Jujutsu High just for the hype, but just look at how cool the architecture of True Cross Academy is! It's actually an exorcist school that is hidden inside a huge regular private school, and you can access it only by using a special magic key. The lessons include not just battles, but also potion mastery, artifact handling, and other things specific for this type of life.
