Let’s remember them!
Amnesia is a peculiar trope that gives space for a lot of interesting story decisions. It can come in various forms, and sometimes characters forget a few things or days from their lives, and sometimes their names are the only thing they remember.
So let’s take a look at such characters and talk about their memory issues.
- Chiyuki — Death Parade
The entire point of Death Parade is that people are taken to a mysterious bar, Quindecim, without any recollection of their deaths. Chiyuki, however, is the one who knows she’s dead.
But she doesn’t remember how and when she died, as well as all the other specifics of this unfortunate event or even her name. It takes her the entire series to finally discover aspects of herself that have been forgotten.
- Haise — Tokyo Ghoul
If we were ever Kaneki Ken, we would never forget it! But Haise is not us, so he does forget his dark past due to the trauma he experienced as Kaneki.
Kaneki is still there, though, tormenting Haise and asking him to accept his past self. His memories did come back to him after a while, but we sometimes wonder if it would have been easier if they hadn’t.
- Lucy — Elfen Lied
Lucy has a lot of mental issues, and split personality along with amnesia is among them. A shot to her head made her forget about her monstrous side for some time, and she kept switching between a childish girl and a merciless killer.
If you’re looking for a series not only with amnesia, but also with a deeply troubled and even evil protagonist, Elfen Lied is a great choice. Old classics that can still be highly enjoyable!
- Light — Death Note
Don’t worry, it’s all part of his clever plan.
To prove himself innocent and make L change his mind about Light being Kira, our protagonist gives up on his death note and loses all recollection of using it. It was curious to see him having no memories of all the murders he’d committed and even witness another side of him.
- Kaiman — Dorohedoro
Kaiman is not even his real name, it was given to him by Nikaido, because the man didn’t remember his true name.
Kaiman has no recollection of his previous life. He just woke up one day with the head of a large reptile and decided that he was a victim of a sorcerer, who cursed him with this hideous head. Don’t know about you, but we feel a bit sorry for him. No one deserves to look like that.
