Otaku should really pay more attention to anime ending songs, really.
Many anime fans listen to their favorite openings from anime, but endings don’t get as much attention. While there are definitely fewer hit endings than openings, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any, either. Let’s look at some.
Anohana – Secret base
Anohana’s ending theme, Secret base, is actually a cover of a song from the early 2000’s. It is a perfect fit for the anime. A song about a group of friends reflecting on their childhood, there might have been no better song for the anime to use. While the opening, Aoi Shiori, is famous itself, the anime’s ending is far more popular.
ALI has become a hit with otaku recently. With the west being exposed to them after they performed the opening for the first season of Beastars, many fans were hyped when they were announced to do the second ending for Jujutsu Kaisen — and the hype was absolutely justified. Lost in Paradise is one of the most popular ending songs of recent years, with the dance from its visuals being iconic as well.
Shadows House – Nai Nai
The opening to Shadows House is an instrumental track, setting up the perfect mood for the anime. While a great fit for the anime, not many otaku remember it on its own. That can’t be said for the ending, however. ReoNa’s Nai Nai quickly became a fan favorite, with many people saying it’s arguably the best ending of the season it aired in. While that is debatable, it was still extremely popular, with ReoNa returning to perform the opening for the second season.
Naruto’s first opening is remembered fondly — but its first ending even more so. Akeboshi’s guitar is a mellow song that, ironically, becomes even better after you finish the anime. It’s perfect after you finish the show, filling you with memories every time you listen to it. Maybe that’s why fans love it so much. Naruto has many other memorable endings, but this is the one that resonated with fans the most.
Bakemonogatari’s ending, while not as popular as its fourth opening (Renai Circulation), is probably the most popular song of the series. It absolutely deserves it, and the lyrics fit the anime perfectly — especially the scene at the end of Episode 12, where it plays over the anime. The song also helped to kickstart the solo career of Nagi Yanagi (who performed the vocals for supercell in that song), who would later become popular for singing for anime like My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU and Just Because.
