5 Anime Sequels We've Had No News About for Years

This kind of situation is surprisingly common.

The recent Yuri!!! on Ice situation has been tragic for the fans. The movie was announced about half a decade ago, and, after many delays, was canceled in the end. It’s not the only anime sequel that was taking a lot of time to produce, though — here are some other examples.

My Dress-Up Darling

Season 1: 2022; Sequel announced: 2022

As it often happens with popular modern anime series, the sequel of My Dress-Up Darling (Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru) was teased right after the first season ended.

Surprisingly enough, despite the apparent popularity of the series, there have been no updates since then. Of course, it’s likely still in production, but we don’t even know if it is going to be a full season or a movie at the moment.

Made in Abyss

Season 2: 2022; Sequel announced: 2023

In early 2023, it was stated that The Golden City of the Scorching Sun arc of Made in Abyss will receive a continuation. It would seem that fans should be happy about the series getting an adaptation, but by now, they don’t even believe it’ll come out in the next few years — if ever.

At the moment, there are less than 10 unadapted manga chapters in Made in Abyss. As such, it might take at least a few years for the anime to have enough content to adapt even as a movie.

Saga of Tanya the Evil

Movie: 2019; Season 2 announced: 2021

One of the more unique isekai out there, Saga of Tanya the Evil (Youjo Senki) is rightfully praised for its darker take on the genre as well as a ruthless protagonist who is an antihero at best (and a true villain at worst). Still, it’s incredibly entertaining, and fans were practically begging for a continuation after the first season ended.

A few years after S1, they got a movie, but that wasn’t nearly enough. In 2021, a short comedy special was released, and a proper second season was teased. It’s presumably still being developed, but there’s no date yet.

Zombieland Saga

Season 2: 2021; Movie announced: 2021

We don’t exactly know if the announced movie of Zombieland Saga is going to be a sequel, but many fans assume it is — because it desperately needs to close out some plot threads.

The second season felt like it was going towards a grand finale, but we never got it: instead, we got an announcement for the movie. And since then, there’s been no news.

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

Season 1: 2010; Sequel announced: 2022

One of the most infamous examples of a cliffhanger ending, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is an absolutely crazy series by studio Trigger. Full of violence and other mature content, it takes inspiration from Western cartoons for adult audiences.

And probably for the same reason, it ended on one of the worst cliffhangers in all of anime. It took 12 years for Trigger to even announce the sequel, and we still don’t know when (or if) it will come out.
