5 Anime Set in an Unusual Place: From Seas to Abysses

If you’re tired of the USA and Japan, we have a couple of suggestions.

While the setting of a series is not always the most important thing, and a big number of fans care about the story and the characters more, it’s still nice to have something different from Japan for a change. If you’re craving something unusual, this is the list for you.

  1. A Lull in the Sea (Nagi no Asu kara)

If you love water, this would be the perfect choice for you. The title spoils the setting for you already as the anime is set next to and even under the sea.

A Lull in the Sea explores the world where all people used to live underwater and had the ability to breathe there. However, some of them preferred the surface, and their decision to leave the sea took away their ability to breathe underwater, too.

  1. Children of the Whales (Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau)

This world is covered by an endless sea of sand, but there’s an island floating on top of it, where the events of this anime take place.

The inhabitants of the island’s ancient town have been given supernatural abilities at the cost of an untimely death. This island is not the only one, but all the others that Chakuro has seen before were abandoned. Until one day, when there’s another island, the exploration of which will change the protagonist’s life.

  1. Land of the Lustrous (Houseki no Kuni)

This anime is set in the distant future. The world has been destroyed by six meteors, the life as we know it doesn’t exist anymore. A new race of life forms emerged, and crystalline organisms called Gems now inhabit the world.

Don’t let the anime’s unusual art style push you away, Land of the Lustrous is a great action fantasy that will surprise and thrill you on many occasions.

  1. Made in Abyss

Another fantasy world on our list. This anime takes place in the Abyss, which is a giant hole going deep into the earth. It’s got several levels, and each of them can surprise you with the horrors that are hidden there.

Brace yourselves, though, because Made in Abyss is a very dark and twisted fantasy, so if you’re looking for something more relaxed, you might want to try a different series on our list.

  1. Dorohedoro

This series is set in the near post-apocalyptic future, where humans and sorcerers are two distinct species. Caiman, who has a reptilian head as a result of a sorcerer’s magic, is looking for the person that cursed him. And his friend Nikaido is ready to assist him in his search.

If you’re looking for a great action fantasy, this is your sign to watch Dorohedoro. Now is definitely the best time to get into it since Season 2 has just been announced.
