The reaction seems a bit too much.
Summary:
- Attack on Titan No Requiem is a fan-made manga.
- It's based on one of the Attack on Titan theories.
- The creator of AOTNR is receives a lot of hate.
Attack on Titan No Requiem (or AOTNR) is a fan-made project based on the manga and anime series by Hajime Isayama. It explores the alternative ending of Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) and rewrites the three last chapters of the original series.
Why does it exist?
It's difficult to find an article about the finale of Attack on Titan without the word "controversial" in it, and it's true, the ending was not everyone's cup of tea. Some fans got so upset by how things were handled in the last couple of chapters that they just want to forget everything about Attack on Titan now.
Back when the finale was still unknown and the manga was unfinished, there were a lot of theories about the ending. And one of them suggested that Eren would complete the Rumbling and end the lives of everyone outside of Paradis.
This theory became so popular among the fans that their disappointment was immeasurable when it didn't come true. That's how AOTNR was born: this is a fan-made manga that explores this theory.
AOTNR gets a lot of hate
Although AOTNR was meant to manage the controversy, it only caused more. And it made ending defenders furious for a variety of reasons. First of all, they disliked the 100% Rumbling scenario, and second of all, most of them absolutely hate the idea of Eren being the father of Historia's child and having any affiliations with her.
It didn't prevent AOTNR from further releases, though, and the project is even getting a fan anime adaptation by studio Eclypse, which angered ending defenders even more.
K-Lionheart (@KlionheartArt on X) is the director of art and story of AOTNR, and she's been treated the worst by the fandom. After the recent announcement about Part 4 of the fan manga, she started receiving threats from Attack on Titan once again. K-Lionheart had to restrict her X account to avoid the hateful messages and fans' outrage.
This is all very upsetting, of course, because no one has to deal with this amount of hate for doing something that they love. AOTNR is not a project that's aimed at disrespecting Hajime Isayama and his work. On the contrary, this is a way to engage with the fandom and keep the story alive.
AOTNR is nothing more than just fanfiction. A really popular and well-made one, but still fanfiction. And it has to be treated as such: it's wonderful if you enjoy it, and you have the right to dislike it. But threatening the author because of it feels bizarre.
