Chainsaw Man’s Denji is Smarter Than You Think, and Here’s Why

Chainsaw Man’s Denji is Smarter Than You Think, and Here’s Why

You shouldn’t underestimate him.

Chainsaw Man manga spoiler ahead!

Summary:

  • Denji is not considered a very intelligent character.
  • However, his battle IQ is quite high.
  • Denji managed to kill various Devils and even defeat Makima.

When we first see Denji in Chainsaw Man, he doesn’t really give off the most intelligent vibes. He seems shallow, he gets himself into a yakuza ruse and almost dies because of his mistake. And if not for Pochita’s decision to save his life, we wouldn’t even have the Chainsaw Man series now.

Although he’s pretty great in battle and it feels like nothing can scare him if there’s a reward of a naked lady or food after a fight, his intelligence is hardly an interesting topic. However, fans think that’s unfair, and Denji’s wits deserve a little bit of attention.

Denji has got great battle IQ

As we’ve said, with the right motivation Denji becomes a true menace on the battlefield. He manages to defeat the Bat Devil only because Power promises to let him touch her breast later. Makima also manipulates him, promising to grant him one of his wishes if he manages to defeat the Gun Devil, and he’s eager to comply.

Denji is capable of acting fast and using strategic thinking. He works well under stress and has a great survival instinct. Denji is also a great planner, and he can show it perfectly if you give him a chance.

Although his motivations are shallow at first, they do work, as he truly wants to just keep having food and shelter as well as interacting with pretty girls. And all of this keeps him fighting and succeeding. He also learns from his mistakes and is able to pick up on the little things that give him an advantage.

While he is initially defeated by the Katana Man, their rematch ends up with Denji’s victory. Motivated student and fast learner: Denji doesn’t sound like a complete dumbass after all, does he?

He managed to outsmart Makima

Yes, you heard that right. Makima is one of the smartest characters in Chainsaw Man, and she is an outstanding manipulator and scheme master. She creates an aura of undefeatability around herself, and her powers have already amazed anime-onlys, but the manga goes further than that.

Besides, she is one of the Horsemen in the series, and these are the girls you don’t mess with. But Denji did mess. And succeeded.

Denji managed to fool Makima into thinking that she was fighting him, when it was actually Pochita. This allowed him to strike Makima and finally defeat her. He hides in a pile of corpses and waits until Makima thinks she’s victorious only to appear and hit her. No one else in the series could ever, if you ask us.

You shouldn’t underestimate him.
