Great Pretender Razbliuto Will Be More Different Than We Thought

Big news, everyone!

Summary:

  • Anime NYC 2023 panel gave us more news on Great Pretender Razbliuto.
  • The story will feature a new main cast, with Dorothy as the MC.
  • This ONA will be streamed by Crunchyroll, rather than Netflix.

During their panel at Anime NYC 2023, Wit Studio and Production I.G. had officially announced Great Pretender Razbliuto ONA, and shared some important details about the sequel to the original series. And some of these details are quite newsworthy.

Story details.

First of all — the second season will change its main cast. Rather than following Makoto Edamura and Laurent Thierry’s team, Razbliuto will feature Laurent’s ex-fiancee Dorothy and her own team in a direct continuation to Great Pretender’s final case. A main cast shakeup like this is quite rare, though don’t worry — we’ll still meet Edamame during this season (if only in passing). Aside from this, the details on the story of Razbliuto are rather scarce — though perhaps, the change of the main cast is a hint of itself.

Just like Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (Jojo no Kymyou na Bouken) has proven with each subsequent Part, a change of the main character is a chance to reset the board. Lower the stakes, introduce new set pieces, and hopefully reach even greater heights this time around. And given the poor reception of the last arc of Great Pretender’s first season, they did have a reason to do so.

Alternatively, setting up multiple casts of characters might be a preparation for a Marvel-style crossover event, with two (or even more) teams joining in on the same case — perhaps, even, from the opposing sides.

Finally, there’s also a chance that something is going to happen to Makoto and/or Laurent — and rather than ending the story Cowboy Bebop-style, the story writers decided to shift the perspective instead. Either way, we’ll have to wait for more info to know for sure.

Here’s something completely unexpected — the second season of Great Pretender will not be a Netflix Original. And this is unexpected, yet welcome news.

Netflix is known to back high quality animations, consistently giving us shows like Castlevania and Blue-Eyed Samurai. It is also infamous for the cancellation of great shows (where’s the second season of Dorohedoro, Netflix?!), releasing shows in huge single-day batches (which is horrible for fans’ engagement), and sometimes even randomly timegating parts of anime season (Beastars, Little Witch Academia and Carole & Tuesday). Even Jojo’s Part 6: Stone Ocean was a Netflix Original, and had a downright disgusting update schedule of three batches of single-day releases!

Razbliuto will instead be streamed by Crunchyroll — though once again, it will be a single-day batch release. It will also be shown in select movie theaters in USA — meaning, this ONA will likely be a shorter deal than the original Great Pretender — perhaps, only up to 6-8 episodes — or, alternatively, it will be available in multiple simultaneous/consecutive screenings that cover Razbliuto case by case.

Is Netflix good or bad for the anime industry?
